Play it again, Sam! Englishman Horsfield leads

Carpet Capital Collegiate

By Golfweek Staff
Manchester-born Walker Cup player Sam Horsfield, pictured abve by Tracey Wilcox, got the new US college season off to a strong start, posting a 7-under 65 to hold the lead at the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Georgia.
Horsfield leads Virginia’s Jimmy Stanger by two shots.
Stanger led a Virginia team that shares the lead with Auburn at 12 under. Danny Walker is T-11 after an eagle at the 15th hole pushed him to a 3-under 69.
Three Tigers are joint third at 4 under with five other players. Ryan Benton, Will Long and Trace Crowe, who is competing as an individual, all posted 68s to open the season.
Despite Horsfield’s strong round, the Florida Gators are just T-7 as a team at 4 under, eight shots off the lead. Alejandro Tosti and Ryan Orr each posted a 76, meaning the team had to count one of them toward the team score.
“Sam (Horsfield) was huge for us, shooting seven-under and taking the lead and just continuing to be the rock in the cleanup spot in our lineup like he’s done for the last year or so,” Gators coach JC Deacon said.
“Obviously an awesome round, but the other guys have got to pick it up. Jorge (Garcia) and Gordon (Neale) had a solid day, but we just can’t afford to count a 76 and we’ve got to have the guys be better than that. I think we got a little bit of the rust off today and their focus will be better tomorrow, but we can’t be counting a 76 on a day like today, it was just perfect out here.
