More success for the Merchiston Golf Acad
teams after long trip to West Berkshire

On Friday afternoon, the U13 Merchiston Golf Academy team f four boys set out on their 900 mile round trip to London.
Staying in Slough on Friday night, then on to a practice round at Sunningdales Ladies course on Saturday morning for the Junior Open there in June, the boys were fully prepared for their big ISGA tournament, the inaugural Wellington Salver, on Sunday morning over the picturesque nine-hole Wellington College course in West Berkshire.
With some of the nation's top junior golfers competing individually and, for their school, in the coveted Wellington Salver TeamTrophy, this was always going to be a great test for the young but talented Merchiston boys.
Playing the course "blind", they were somewhat already behind the "black ball" before they even started the round.
However, a little prior intelligence was given to Alan Murdoch, the Merchiston Director of Golf, by a "local" Scot (Dave Rennie- past club professional at Wentworth) who told him some background information on the very tricky lay-out.
"Both Merchiston teams really showed their golfing know how and wonderful discipline skills were put to the highest test in such a tantalising golf course and sweltering weather conditions!" said Alan.
"Something too, our boys had not experienced in such along time."
The Merchiston A team of Papon Sawatyanon and Cameron Adam won the Wellington Salver with a total of 159 and the Merchiston B team - Lyle Murdoch and Luis Masaveu-Roncal - were runners up with a total of 165 in the inaugural team school event.
"This was a major win for the Merchiston Golf Academy and the biggest win to date for the U13 team," said Mr Murdoch.
This team has now won its last four events played:
The ISGA U13 Scottish Open
The Loretto Junior Championship and Simmers Cup
The ISGA Scottish National Junior League
and now
The ISGA Wellington Salver
Alan Murdoch is naturally delighted with the progress the boys have made since joining the school.
"All four boys are in their first year at the school, and the progress they have made since their start has been incredible," he said.
"These boys are in a school that allows them to golf potentially every day of the week and still have a full academic programme too.
"It really is a quality environment that these boys are learning in, and that's how progress is made."
