Sides evenly matched at Royal Dornoch

There was little to choose between the two sides after the first day of the Jacques Leglise Trophy at Royal Dornoch Golf Club where Great Britain and Ireland lead the Continent of Europe 6 ½ - 5 ½.
As the afternoon winds whipped up across the Dornoch Firth, keeping the ball in play was paramount for the singles matches around this wonderful and testing old links which celebrates its 400th year in 2016.
The scoreline was decided by the sixth singles tie where Ben Chamberlain from Wales kept his composure to hole a six-foot putt for par on the 18th to halve his match with Denmark’s Christoffer Bring.
Moments earlier England’s Bradley Moore, GB and I playing captain, won the the anchor match against Italy’s Guido Migliozzi 3 and 1. The Carris Trophy champion was three-up in the early stages but typical of the Continent of Europe’s battling qualities, Migliozzi got back to all-square with five to play before Moore pressed on.
“I didn’t think as a team we played as well as we did in practice. Conditions were a little bit more difficult and that’s often the problem playing practice rounds in benign conditions,” explained GB and I captain Peter McEvoy.
“The encouraging thing is we were good at the death - as a team we played the 18th well. Ben’s match was fairly typical of what went on today. Holing those important putts showed good character and that’s encouraging.”
Marco Penge, a three-time champion this year, was a convincing 4 and 3 winner against Germany’s Maximilian Schmitt in the top singles but matters were quickly levelled as Norway’s Viktor Hovland was equally impressive in his 5 and 3 win over Ireland’s Thomas Mulligan.
Like his Welsh compatriot, Tim Harry went the distance and got up and down at the 18th to win by one hole against Norway’s Kristoffer Reitan. Nairn’s Sandy Scott brought the biggest crowd with him (his school put on a bus so his classmates could watch him in action) and won 2 and 1 against Sweden’s Tim Widing.
Elsewhere Scotland’s Calum Fyfe lost to Iceland’s Gisli Sveinbergsson 3 and 2 and England’s William Enefer lost by the same margin to John Axelsen from Denmark.
“It was a very close match. The wind came strong in the afternoon and the singles matches were very close,” said Portugal’s Miguel Franco de Sousa, Captain of Continent of Europe.
“We are just one point behind and anything can happen tomorrow. This is such a fantastic golf course, great characteristics for match play, everything can turn around very quickly.
“We’re confident heading into tomorrow. There is still all to play for.”
The morning foursomes ebbed and flowed before both sides eventually went into lunch tied 2-2.
McEvoy’s charges held an early advantage and led in three ties with the exception of the top match where Penge and Mulligan struggled to find their best form. The GB and I pair always trailed against Hovland and Reitan and the Norwegian duo ran out comfortable 5 and 4 winners.
Moore and Enefer won the bottom match 3 and 2 against France’s Adrien Pendaries and Migliozzi, while the middle foursomes ties contained the most drama.
Scott and Fyfe looked in control in front of the home crowds and were one-up after nine. However, the match quickly turned on its head as the Danish pair of Bring and Axelsen claimed five of the next six holes to win 4 and 3.
Harry and Thomas Williams overcame a “clumsy” mistake on the 13th where Williams wrongly teed off at the par-3 instead of Harry in the alternate shots format and therefore lost the hole, having been three-up at one stage.
Momentum swung as Wilding and Sveinbergsson got it back to all-square standing on the 18th. However, the Welsh pair held their nerve to make par and win by one-hole.
“Tomorrow will be tough, it’s always tough. They have some really quality players and we’ll have to strangle every point out of it as always,” added McEvoy

Broadhurst stakes his claim at Archerfield
EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS

Paul Broadhurst survived a late scare to claim a share of the lead heading into the final round of the Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Senior Open over the Fidra course at Archerfield Links.

The 50 year old English debutant, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency,  was seven under par after 14 holes of his second round but then dropped four shots over his last four holes to card a three under par 69 and drop into a share of the lead with Gordon Manson on three under par 141.
On a day when a strong wind blew towards the Firth of Forth, a total of 11 players finished within two shots of the lead with 18 holes to come.
Peter Fowler shot a fine four under par 68 to move up into a share of third place with Ken Tarling and Bill Longmuir on two under par 142, while England’s Phil Golding matched Broadhurst’s 69 to tie for sixth place alongside Gordon Brand Jnr, Pedro Linhart, Carl Mason, Stephen McAllister with former Scottish Senior Open champion Santiago Luna one shot further back.

Bob Cameron, Juan Quiros, Mark Mouland, Tim Thelan and Graeme Bell also remain very much in contention having played the first 36 holes in a cumulative level par 144.

Broadhurst is making his Senior Tour debut after turning 50 little more than a week ago and he could not have asked for a better start to his second round. He had opened with a level par 72 and starting from the tenth a day later he quickly moved to seven under par with birdies at the 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 17th, first and second before hitting reverse gear with a bogey on the sixth, a double bogey on the seventh and a bogey on the ninth.

“I played lovely for the first 14 holes and don’t really know what happened after that,” admitted the former Ryder Cup player, who is bidding to become just the tenth player to win on his debut on the European Senior Tour.

“I didn’t do too much wrong to be honest. I hit a very good drive down six but it disappeared into the trap. I wasn’t trying to be cute but it caught the lip and the ball came back in. It was a hell of a good six in the end.

“On seven I hit a bad drive off the fairway down the right. It was tight to the trees. I tried to hit a low cut iron but it cut too quickly and hit a tree full in the middle and bounced straight back beside a cone. I had no shot then. I was lucky to get back to the fairway.

“It was almost as if everything went wrong over the last four holes but I suppose that’s golf for you. It just didn’t happen and now I’ve got to try to put that behind me and get back on track tomorrow.

“If somebody had said at the start of the week that I would be tied for the lead with a round to go I would have taken that but obviously dropping four shots over the last four holes is disappointing.

“It was good while it lasted and now I’ve just got to find the magic again. I’ve had some low scores this year. At the Cornish Festival I shot 67-64-64 so the low one is in there. I’ve just got to try to produce it tomorrow. I don’t really know what happened to be honest. I can’t really explain it.”

St Andrews-born Manson arrived in East Lothian full of confidence after winning his first European Senior tour title at the recent Swiss Seniors Open at Bad Ragaz. He had opened with a one under par 71 and moved up to three under with a 70 that began with five birdies in his first 12 holes before dropping shots at the 14th and 15th coming home.

“I love it in Scotland,” said the Austrian-based former club professional.” I feel at home here. It inspires me.

“The good thing about here at Archerfield is that on a good day you can see the Kingdom of Fife. That’s the special thing about playing here. The course is nice but the best bit about it is you can see the Kingdom of Fife (across the Firth of Forth).“I finished second at the ISPS Handa PGA

Seniors Championship at Close House and in the following tournament I won in Switzerland. That was a big confidence booster. Getting into the winner’s circle is not so easy. Some guys manage it quicker than others but I’ve got there in the end and it was a great feeling to have done it.
“I suppose you could say it was the culmination of four years' hard work. This is my fifth season on the Senior Tour. You’ve just got to keep plugging away, keep working and if you’re lucky your day might come.
“I played steady today,” he added.” I was good on the greens. I’ve got the pace on the greens and I’m hitting it solid. Those two holes on the back nine cost me a couple of shots but other than that I played very well. It’s still tough out there. The wind might not be quite as strong as yesterday but it’s still a bigger factor on certain holes. It could by no means be described as easy.”
That was something the Fidra course architect DJ Russell found to his cost. He had shared the lead with Peter O’Malley and Gary Marks after opening with a two under par 70 but all three dropped well down the leaderboard after Marks carded a 76, O’Malley shot 78 and Russell stuttered to an 84.
“What a difference a day makes,” said Russell. “I dropped a shot at the first after having to rush to the first tee and that seemed to set the tone for the day.
“I didn’t putt very well and I had a couple of stupid disasters. On the 12th I hit it into a bad lie in the left-hand rough. I tried to be a bit greedy and I hit it into the long grass across the green. That cost me a seven and on the fifth I ran up an eight after hitting it left into the woods. I hit a tree and it came back to me. I had another go but that didn’t work any better. It was a good eight in the end.
“It was a horrible day and my confidence disintegrated,” he explained.” If I’ve had a problem throughout my career it is performing when I’ve been the centre of attention and this was another example of that today. It’s wonderful we’re playing the tournament here but with everything doing on it might have been a little bit too much for me mentally.”

FLAWLESS FITZPATRICK HITS FRONT IN CZECH MASTERS

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Rising star Matthew Fitzpatrick holed a 15ft birdie putt on his final hole for a share of the lead at the halfway mark of the D+D REAL Czech Masters today.
The Englishman, who turns 21 next Tuesday, also sank a 30ft eagle putt on the 12th hole in his five under par second round of 67 to move to 11 under par for the tournament, a total which was match by Sweden’s Pelle Edberg, who also birdied his final hole for a round of 67.
It was Fitzpatrick’s second consecutive bogey-free round at Albatross Golf Resort as he bids for a maiden European Tour title, having finished runner up to fellow Sheffield native Danny Willett in last month’s Omega European Masters in Switzerland.
The former US Amateur Champion and Edberg are one shot clear of Belgian Thomas Pieters, who signed for round of 68 to move to ten under par, while English pair Robert Dinwiddie (67) and Sam Hutsby (70) and Denmark’s Thorbjørn Olesen share fourth position on eight under par, three shots behind the leading pair.
Key player quotes
Matthew Fitzpatrick – 67 (-11 total)
“It was very consistent today. I played nicely and hit a lot of greens again which is always important to keep making pars and then take your chances when you have them. I gave myself a few out there. I got a bit frustrated in the middle of the round when I wasn’t holing any putts. I missed a few chances but picked it up on the back nine.
“The putt on 18th was a nice way to finish with a birdie, to pick up one more and move to the top.  And the eagle on 12 was great. It nice seven wood in there to about 30ft and the hole for eagle. I’m looking forward to the weekend now. It’s another chance to put myself in contention for Sunday.
“I took a lot from contending in Crans. It was a great week for me. I don’t really know how to explain it but I gained a lot of experience from playing with Danny (Willett). I know him quite well. He is top 30 in the world, so obviously one of the best players around.”
Pelle Edberg – 67 (-11 total)
“Like yesterday I putted really well. I holed a lot of putts and it was good off the tee and had some nice irons, so it added up to a good score. I talked to a few guys this morning and they said there was no wind so there was some good scores out there, so we got a bit nervous when it picked up on the front nine, but it died down on the back nine.
“I couldn’t be in a better position. I’m feeling pretty good and feeling comfortable about most parts of my game. I feel confident so I want to see how well I can do this week. In the past if I’ve had a good week, it normally stays for a couple of weeks, and that is what has happened again.”
Thomas Pieters – 68 (-10 total)
“I played another solid day. I hit it well off the tee. I gave myself a lot of opportunities. The wind got up on the back nine. I played a bunch of holes downwind when it got up, so that was nice. But it definitely was a lot tougher out there. Seven and eight were both tough so I got good pars there.
“The course suits me. Some of these tee shots really suit my eye. I’m striking the ball well off the tee which helps. I made a couple of stupid bogeys but I hit it really well again off the tee. Some of the wedges I hit really close, which gave me chances for birdies and I rolled in a few putts.
“You’ve got to patient on Friday and Saturday and just get into contention. I just tried to give myself plenty of opportunities and hopefully I can have a good weekend. We all practise hard to be here and I’ve worked hard the last few weeks, so it is nice to see a low score on there.”

Title-holder Ronnie Clark (Erskine) finished fourth with a 76 for 150
Former senior international Brian Grieve (King James VI) performed strongly at the age of 70 to finish joint sixth on 153 and  had the consolation of winning the handicap section by three strokes with an aggregate score of 143.
Nairn Dunbar presented an excellent test for the high quality field with a CSS of 74 for the first round and 75 for the second round  for the par 72 course.

PGA EuroPro Tour report and scores

Elson leads with a round to go at Moor Allerton
NEWS RELEASE BY NICK TEALE
Jamie Elson will take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the PGA EuroPro Tour's Clipper Logistics Players Championship at Moor Allerton Golf Club in Leeds.

Elson (Team Jenahura) carded a third-round 68, three under par, to move to six under and a one-stroke lead over Mark Laskey (Brocket Hall Golf Club), who had carded a 66 to move to second from level par at the start of the day.

Originally from Warwickshire, Elson, who now resides in Surrey, has a wealth of European Tour experience but has struggled for Challenge Tour form this summer.

Six birdies in his third round propelled him to the top of the leaderboard but dropped shots at the 6th, 11th and 13th meant the field remained in touch with the 34-year-old.

Laskey, a EuroPro winner at Rowallan Castle in 2013, carded the best score of the round, a five-under 66. He began the day at level par but will enter Saturday’s final 18 just one back.

The Welshman had just one blemish on his card. He birdied the 3rd and 5th but dropped a shot at 11. An eagle at the 12th was the perfect remedy and a birdie-birdie finish saw Laskey to second on the leaderboard.

James Lynch (Ham Manor Golf Club) and Craig Farrelly (TPS) share third on four under, two behind Elson. Steve Uzzell (Hornsea Golf Club) and Darren Wright, both previous EuroPro Tour winners, are fifth on two under alongside Brian Casey (Headfort Golf Club). Birdies at 17 and 18 saw the 36-hole leader recover slightly from a disappointing third round and he signed for a 74 to remain in contention.

Marcus Armitage, who won his second EuroPro Tour title of the season in last week’s Tree of Life Championship at Close House, dropped six shots on his last four holes to fall from a share of the six under lead to a seven-way tie for eighth on one under par.

The fourth and final round takes place on Saturday and will be filmed for a two-hour highlights package to air on Sky Sports on Tuesday, September 8.

The winner will take home £12,000 from the increased £60,000 prize fund. Spectator entry is free throughout the event and live scoring can be found at www.europrotour.com.
