Golf Channel insider Tim Rosaforte, citing sources at the R and A,
reported that Turnberry wasn’t in the mix for the 2020 or ’21 Open, even
before presidential hopeful Donald Trump’s anti-Muslim remarks.
Turnberry last hosted a men’s Open in 2009. The Independent on Sunday reported that the course has been removed from the Open rota, and the Telegraph added that the European Tour is ready to cut ties with Trump, saying that plans for Trump International Links in North-east Scotlnd to host the 2017 Scottish Open “have been ripped up.”
“It is my belief and that of the R and A that golf should be open to
all, regardless of gender, race, nationality or religion,” R and A chief
executive Martin Slumbers said in a statement.
The R and A has announced upcoming venues for the Open through 2019.
