Brandt Jobe needed all of his 18-under-par total to win Champions Tour Q-School, but he got the job done on Friday afternoon.
Jobe, who turned 50 in August, fired a final-round 2-under 69 at TPC Scottsdale's Champions Course to earn Q-School medalist honors by a single stroke. His earlie rounds were 66, 65 and 66
"I did just a good enough job today and now I’m really looking forward to next year," Jobe said. "It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to plan a schedule.”
Jose Coceres, Tom Byrum and Willie Wood all finished at 17 under and in a tie for second. Mike Grob took solo fifth at 16 under.
The top five finishers from the four-day, 72-hole event earned full Champions Tour status for 2016, which means all of these names got what they came for.
Byrum needed a final-round 63 to get his piece.
“I just went out today and tried to make as many birdies as I could. I got it going and had some good swing thoughts today. I had putted well all week so I knew if I could give myself some better scoring opportunities on the greens, I’d have a chance,” Byrum said. “It was nice to put this kind of a round together.”
Coceres only needed a 67, but the two-time PGA Tour winner has made 27 of 29 Champions Tour cuts, even if he hasn't come close to the winners' circle in the 50-and-over group yet.
Jobe, meanwhile, is in his first eligible season on the Champions Tour, and will do so fully exempt in 2016.
The six-time winner on the Japan Golf Tour has only played one Champions Tour event, netting a T-21 in October's San Antonio Championship.
The seven players who finished after Grob for the last spot – John Riegger, Gibby Gilbert III, Jean-Francois Remesy, Stan Utley, Steve Jones, Chien Soon Lu and Miguel Angel Martin - earned conditional status for their finishes.
The scoring was very low and Barry Lane (T20 on eight-under 275) and Paul Broadhurst (T30) on eight-under 276) missed out.
