Fog delay means first round not finished until Friday morning

Colsaerts and Sullivan in seventh heaven in

Portugal Masters

Andy Sullivan defied the descending gloom to join Nicolas Colsaerts in a share of the lead on seven under par on the opening day of the Portugal Masters.
Thick morning fog had led to a 55 minute delay to all tee times, but Sullivan submitted his score of 64 just before bad light stopped play shortly after 7pm.
The Englishman, who has already won twice this season, notched eight birdies and a solitary bogey at Oceânico Victoria Golf Course.
Earlier in the day, Colsaerts had exploded out of the blocks, using his prodigious length to overpower the Vilamoura venue. But having reached the turn in 30 and added an eagle at the fifth hole, the Belgian dropped his only shot of the day at the seventh to give hope to the chasing pack.
Thomas Pieters had appeared on course to join his compatriot in a share of the lead, only for a bogey at the last to drop him back to six under par.
He was later joined on that mark by Spaniard Eduardo De La Riva, Scotland’s David Drysdale and South African Thomas Aiken, whose round of 66 featured two eagles in three holes.

Marc Warren and Paul Lawrie, playing in the same threesome, both had 71s.
Key Quotes
ANDY SULLIVAN
"I just seemed to gain confidence in my game. I hit a lot of good shots through the middle part of the round that really got me going. I’m also putting very nicely – it was great to see the ball go in the hole for a change.
“I was frustrated with the bogey on the 16th, because I hit two good putts and the second one horseshoed round the hole. But to hit straight back with a birdie was really pleasing. I was hoping to sneak one on the last as well, just to get one ahead, but overall it was still a really pleasing day.”
Nicolas Colsaerts: “I think I got away with it a few times, especially on the back nine. I started off in the best of fashion, I was quickly under par and kept it going with a nice little eagle on the 17th. But then I missed a few chances on two and three, so I probably should’ve gone even lower.
“It’s just one of those courses I feel comfortable on. I came so close to shooting a 59 and winning the tournament last year, so I have very good memories of this place. It’s been good to me.”
