Sixteen-year-old Kyle Reid (Balmore) narrowly missed out on a
semi-final place in the St Andrews Boys' Open today.
He was beaten by two holes by the
experienced French international David Ravetto (La Boule).
Playing in
blustery conditions, the pair were evenly matched with Reid playing very solid
golf to par the first 14 holes of the Eden Course.
Excellent approach shots from Ravetto led to
birdies at the 7th, 11th and 12th to put him three
up. Reid rallied, holing 15 and 40 foot birdie putts on the 15th
and 16th to get back to one down.
The 17th was
halved, both players recording pars before Ravetto closed out the match on the
18th
His fifth birdie of the day secured the Frenchman a semi-final tie against compatriot Marc Rodriguez Calassou, teeing off over the Old Course at 6.40am on Thursday
Afterwards Kyle said ‘I’m obviously disappointed not to get
into the semi’s but there are a lot of positives to take away. I was happy
shooting 2 under in these conditions and David is a good player. I played great
golf all week and my game is the strongest it’s ever been so I’m really looking
forward to the rest of the season and I’ve still got another two years to try
and win this , Yu.’
The first semi-final, teeing off at 6.30am Thursday will feature the top seed from Japan, Yuki Shino who will play Graeme Greer, the fourth best qualifier from Carluke.
