Lossiemouth report and scoreboard
DarrenWatson all-the-way winner of North
of Scotland Open stroke-play championship
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Cruden Bay's Darren Watson scored his first SGU 72-hole Order of Merit tournament triumph at Moray Golf Club, Lossiemouth today.
Winner of the David Blair Trophy in the end by three shots, Watson led from start to finish after teeing off by shaving a stroke off the course record with a 64 on Saturday.
He added rounds of 68, 74 and 73 to that for a total of five-under-par 279.
Watson led by three shots after 18 holes, by four at halfway and three after the third round.
The wind, blustery on Sunday morning and strengthening in the afternoon, added a stroke or two to the degree of dificulty over the par-71 Moray Old Course for the final two rounds.
Watson could afford to bogey the seventh, eighth, 14th and 15th and birdie only the first and ninth in halves of 35 and 38 for his final 73.But he knew that all his rivals were having the same problems.
Young Rory Franssen (Inverness) maintained second place through the final round, closing with a 73 for 282. Watson and Franssen were the only two players in a star-studded field to have under-par 72-hole aggregates.
At last weekend's North-east District Open at Cruden Bay, the brothers Franssen fnished third (Cameron) and fifth (Rory) respectively. Cameron's final round of 81 knocked him down the standings at Lossie.
Four players tied for third place on 285 - Barry Hume (Haggs Castle), winner of the Leven Gold Medal two weeks ago, home course man Kyle Godsman, beaten in a play-off in this tournament 12 months ago and winner of the North-east District Open at Cruden Bay last Sunday, Jamie Savage (Cawder), winner of the Irish open stroke play last year, and Balmore's consistent James A Wilson.
None of them could mount a challenge in the testing conditions for the last two rounds.
Former North-east District boys champion Stephen Roger (Cruden Bay) was in third place with 18 holes to go after rounds of 72, 69 and 69, his third-round being the only sub-par score of the final day.
But he slumped in the rising wind over the final round with an 83 for 293.
