Hutch leaves it late to pip Gray for £1,000 prize with a 66 at Ellon

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Last man to finish, Greig Hutcheon (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) pipped the long-time clubhouse leader Stephen Gray (Hayston) for the £1,000 prize with a fine round of four-under-par 66 at the McDonald Ellon Golf Club, Aberdeenshire pro-am.
It was Hutcheon's sixth win of the Tartan Tour season and boosted his domestic earnings for thre year to £18,885.
And yet Greig looked to be heading for a down-the-field finish when he bogeyed the fifth and eighth after a birdie at the second to be out in one over par 38.
Then Hutch's game suddenly clickety-clicked. He birdied five in a row from the 10th to the 14th and parred the rest for a brilliant inward half of five-under-par 28.
Gray had halves of 34-33 with birdies at the fourth, sixth, eighht, 10th and 14th. Late bogeys at the short 11th and 17th gave Hutcheon the chance to catch him - and he grabbed it with both hands. Gray's consolation prize amounted to £800.
Scott Henderson (Kings Links) and Alan Murray (Golf Moray) tied for third place on 68 and earned £525 each.
James McGhee (Bishopbriggs) led the Crasar Design Ltd team of amateurs - Kervin Reid (handicap 13), Stuart Farquhar (14) and Keith Thomson (12) to victory in the pro-am team event with a 17-under-par net score of 123.
