At 43 years old, Greg Owen offered this Saturday at the FedEx St. Jude Classic: "I'm in a position where this year my career is probably on the down spiral a little bit. It's very upsetting to say that. There's a lot of young kids coming through. You got to be game. It's a different game from when I started."
Through 54 holes at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tenn., Owen has been game. He fired a third-round, 3-under 67 to grab a share of the lead with Fabian Gomez at 9-under 201.
Owen, who had never held a 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour before Saturday, totaled 26 putts and hit 11 greens on a day where swirling winds kept scoring in check. He also made just one bogey to go along with four birdies.
"I'm reading (the greens) well, and my pace is good and I feel good with the putter," Owen told The Associated Press. "I've been working hard."
Gomez, who made 24 putts, also hit 11 greens and shot 67. He and Owen lead Brooks Koepka and Scott Brown by a shot. Koepka shot 71 while Brown carded a 68 on Saturday.
Owen's best finish in 213 previous Tour starts is a runner-up showing at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in 2006, but Owen hasn't finished inside the top 20 in 12 starts this season, missing five cuts.
For Owen, a win would be "just a huge, huge relief that what you've been striving for your whole life you can say you've achieved."
