Duke Slips to 25th at NCAA Championship

BRADENTON, Florida. -- Freshman Adam Wood shot a team-low 74 Saturday as Duke posted a 21-over 309 in the second round of the 2015 NCAA Championship at The Concession Golf Club. The Blue Devils slipped to 25th overall with a 36-hole total of 606.
USC holds the tournament lead with a two-under 574 with Illinois three shots back. Georgia (581), LSU (581), South Florida (585) and Vanderbilt (585) round out the top five. The top 15 team following tomorrow's third round will advance to play one more stroke play round Monday. The top eight teams at the end of stroke play advance on to the match play championship.
Wood recorded three birdies on the day but had his round thwarted by a pair of double-bogeys. The Zionsville, Ind., native followed a bogey on No. 2 with back-to-back birdies to move to one-under on the day. He suffered a double-bogey on the par 4 eighth hole and slipped to three-over after a double-bogey on No. 2. Wood settled in to card six pars and a birdie on the par 5 17th hole to close out the round. He enters tomorrow's third round of action tied for 40th with a three-over 147.
Fellow freshman Jake Shuman is also tied for 40th after carding a 78 Saturday. He recorded a pair of birdies in the round but also suffered eight bogeys.
Max Greyserman, a sophomore out of New Jersey, also had a six-over 78 in the second round. He opened the day with a birdie but had two bogeys and a double-bogey over the next eight holes to make the turn at three-over. Greyserman collected six pars on the back nine but also had three more bogeys to conclude the day tied for 144th with a 16-over 160.
Senior Turner Southey-Gordon carded a 79 and is now tied for 85th with an eight-over 152. The Canadian left-hander registered 12 pars in the round and was just three-over late in the round before stumbling down the stretch. Southey-Gordon had two bogeys and a double-bogey over the final four holes of play.
Motin Yeung struggled once again and finished the day with an 84. He had a pair of birdies in the round but also suffered two triple-bogeys and a double-bogey. Yeung sits in 156th after rounds of 88 and 84.
Duke opens third round play Sunday at 7:50 a.m. on the back nine at The Concession Golf Club. The Blue Devils will be paired with Stanford and Texas Tech. Live scoring for the tournament is available at www.golfstat.com.
