Aberdonians' contrasting fortunes in China Open

Ramsay (68) is T10 but Lawrie (78) misses cut

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Julien Quesne continued his rich vein of form to establish a one-shot lead over his fellow Frenchman Alex Levy and America’s Peter Uihlein heading into the weekend of the Volvo China Open.
Quesne, who finished in a tie for fourth in Shenzhen last Sunday, carded a five under par round of 67 at Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club, in Shanghai, to reach eight under par for the week.
Levy, who romped to a four-shot maiden victory in this event 12 months ago before picking up a second title in Portugal, had a makeable putt for what would have been a seventh birdie of the day to reach ten under par on the 14th hole, but having missed it then made a couple of errors over the closing holes.
After driving into a bunker at the 16th, the 24 year old hit his approach into the water en route to a double bogey six.

He also dropped a shot at the short 17th having again found sand from the tee, but did pull one back with a gain at the last for a round of 68.
Quesne had romped to the turn in 32, before getting up-and-down from a bunker on the par five 13th and pitching to four feet at the next as the pace of the morning starters was blown away on a calm afternoon.
Uihlein saved the best to last, pitching in for eagle from off the 18th green to sign for a round of 67 and a seven under par aggregate total.
SCOTSWATCH: Richie Ramsay celebrated his choice as European Tour Player of the Month for April by shooting a 68 for 140 and a T10 position at halfway, four off the pace. But fellow Aberdonian Paul Lawrie had a nightmare day with a 78 for 151, missing the cut by five strokes.

Apart from Ramsay, two other Scots will play the final two rounds. David Drysdale is on 144 (75-69) and Craig Lee on 145 (70-75).
Scots who missed the cut along with Lawrie were Scott Jamieson (148) despite an excellent 69 - 10 shots better than he had in Round 1 and Chris Doak 159 (78-81)
Key quotes
Julien Quesne: “Today was a little easier, because there was less wind. But I also played much better today, so that was the main reason for my good score. I felt very comfortable and hardly missed any shots, so it was a very good day all round.
“My performance last week definitely helped build my confidence, so I felt good at the start of the week and I’m still feeling good now. But there’s a long way to go.”
Alex Levy: “It was another very good day for me. I played very solid and enjoyed the day, except for the 16th hole, where I made a stupid mistake. But I made a nice birdie on the last, so I’ve already forgotten about the 16th. There was no wind today so it was much easier to control my distance, and my iron shots were very good.
“I’ve really enjoyed myself so far, so I hope that can continue. I don’t want to think about my game too much, just be natural. Fairways and greens, that’s all. If I can hole some putts, maybe I will have a chance. I hope so.”
Peter Uihlein: “I hit a great drive down 18, but then pulled my two iron approach a little left of the green. I kept changing between my 54 and 60 degree wedge, finally went for the 60 and nipped it perfectly, it went in at the proper speed so it was a great way to finish.
“I’ve gone for pretty much all of the par fives in two so far this week, apart from the 13th where I tried laying up and ended in a divot, so that was a sign not to try that again! But the greens are so small and undulating that it’s very difficult to find the right spot. You can see from the scoring that it’s a very tricky course.”

Day 2 in numbers
15 – Difference in strokes between Felipe Aguilar’s first and second rounds. The Chilean opened with an 80 and bounced back with a 65 on day two to comfortably make the cut on one over par.
146 – The cut mark, which equals the highest of the 2015 season.
67 – Number of players who made the cut.
4 – Number of Frenchmen in the top ten.
