SCOTS CHALLENGE WIPED OUT IN SPAIN
No Scots have made it through to the match-play stages of the Spanish men's open amateur golf championship at Jerez Golf Club, writes Colin Farquharson.
Nick Macandrew (Royal Aberdeen), pictured, 76-79 and Fraser Moore (Glenbervie) 78-77 both totalled 155 in the 36-hole stroke-play qualifying test - six shots over the limit mark for being among the 32 qualifiers.
Former Scottish champion Alexander Culverwell (Dunbar) shot 75 and 82 for 157.
In contrast, England provide the No 2 seed, Michael Saunders with 71-69, and the No 4 seed, Jonathan Thomson 69-71.
Saunders, Thomson and Viktor Hovland and Spanish ace Ivan Cantero tied at the top of the leaderboard on four-under-par 140.
Hovland had the best second round of the quartet, a 67, which earned him top seeding.
Cantero's second-round 70 gave him the No 3 seed berth.
Irishman Gavin Moynihan, winner of the Scottish open amateur stroke-play title at Panmure last summer, made it to the match-play with a stroke to spare. He had rounds of 78-70.

148 Gavin Moynihan (I(re) 78 70, Ashton Turner 72 76
149 Marco Penge (Eng) 79-70
+Several others players also totalled 149 but there was room for only one on this mark to qualify and Penge had the lowest second round of those on 149 and advanced on his own. Welshman Tim Harry had 77-72 for 149 and was one of the unlucky ones.
