JOHNSTON SCALES NEW HEIGHTS IN

HIGHLANDS WITH THREE-SHOT WIN

REPORT FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
At the foot of the majestic Cairngorm Mountains, Andrew Johnston scaled new career heights as the Englishman stormed to an imperious three-shot victory to claim a maiden European Challenge Tour title at the Scottish Hydro Challenge hosted by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts.
The 25 year old was untouchable as he provided the performance of a true champion, carding a five under par 66 which included an eagle at the par four second hole to leave the rest of the field in his wake.
Johnston began the day with a two-shot lead at the picturesque Macdonald Spey Valley Golf Club AT Aviemore and, having started with a steady par, he holed out with a 58 degree wedge from 83 yards at the second, admitting afterwards that he then began to feel it was his day.
Johnston’s playing partner Moritz Lampert did stage an almighty comeback on the back nine to finish in a share of second place alongside Australian Terry Pilkadaris, having at one point fallen nine shots off the lead.
But even seven birdies on the way home was not enough to get close as Johnston, affectionately known to friends as ‘beef’, peppered the pins all day.
Back to back birdies at the eighth and ninth were followed by two more at the 13th and 14th and while he lost a ball and dropped a shot at the 17th, that did not derail the 2011 Challenge Tour graduate as he closed out his first victory with clinical precision.
“I'm so happy,” said the Londoner, who picked up a cheque for €40,000 and moved to third in the Challenge Tour Rankings. “I wanted to get off to a good start and I thought if I got to one under after three or four holes that would be good, but I was delighted with that eagle.
“I really enjoyed myself out there but you have to, this is why we do what we do, for moments like that. I knew if I didn’t make any mistakes I would be close but Moritz was giving me a hard time on the back nine and I thought, ‘just keep playing your game and stay in there’.
“It’s such a nice feeling, to have a little putt for a win. You watch other people do it every week and you want to do it so it was great to finally do it.
Johnston was in tears afterwards and, having battled back from a shoulder injury which meant he could not play for five months last year, he admitted it was a huge moment in his career as he targets a return to The European Tour, having played in The 2012 Race to Dubai.
“I’ve worked so hard over the last year and you’ve just got to keep that work rate up because everyone’s doing it," he said. "You've got to keep pushing and prepare the best you can for every tournament and that’s the key – the scores will take care of themselves then.
“The injury was horrible. Having five or six months without playing and then having a tough time to even keep my Challenge Tour card last year, it was difficult. But the injury was a turning point too because when I did get through it, I made a few adjustments and worked harder. It changed everything.
“The goal was to get my European Tour card back and I have to push on from here and continue the hard work.”
Lampert, meanwhile, was delighted with his performance on the back nine and, while the German will have to wait for a third victory which would earn automatic European Tour promotion, he was happy to see his friend Johnston finally clinch a first title.
“I was quite nervous going into the day to be honest because I knew what I was playing for,” said the 22 year old, who signed for a four under par final round of 67. “I made a couple of three putts early on but then I just started to play well again and got it going.
“I suppose I've achieved one goal in that I know I have enough money to get on The European Tour at the end of the year at least, so that’s good enough at the moment.
“Andrew played so well though. When you start with a two shot lead and then hole out on the second hole it gives you confidence. I'm happy for him – he’s a nice guy, a good friend of mine, and he really deserved this win.”
Pilkadaris also carded a four under 67 to earn his best finish on the Challenge Tour while Oliver Farr, a winner already this year at the Turkish Airlines Challenge, climbed to fifth in the Rankings courtesy of a tied fourth place finish, alongside Englishman Jack Senior.

MELDRUM HOUSE MAN FINISHES EIGHTEEN-UNDER-PAR AT LUNDIN

ROBB'S EIGHTSOME LEAVES EAST OF

SCOTLAND CH/SHIP RIVALS REELING

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Chris Robb scored one of the easiest wins on record in the East of Scotland Open amateur stroke-play championship at Lundin Golf Club, Fife at the weekend.
The Meldrum House Golf Club, Oldmeldrum member, who played for the last four years on the American college golf circuit as a student at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, won the 72-hole event by eight strokes with an 18-under-par aggregate of 266 for the par-71 links lay-out.
Josh Jamieson (St Andrews New) set the first-round pace with a 66 but after that it was Robb in front all the way with consistently good scoring of 67, 66, 66 and 67 over a course that is by no means easy.
Robb, winner of last year's North-east District Open at Newmachar, is a former Scottish schoolboys champion and until recently was based at Banchory.
Distant runner-up was South AFrican Martin Rohwer who produced the low round of the tournament in Saturday's second session - an eight-under-par 63. He had had an earlier 71 and he added a 69 and 71 on Sunday for a 10-under-par total of 274 - sometimes good enough to win the title in the past.
Third place Brian Soutar (Leven Golfing Society) finished 12 shots behind the winner with rounds of 71, 67, 70 an d70 for 278 so it is fair to say that runaway Robb spreadeagled the field.

DRAMATIC FINISH AT GUT LARCHENHOF, GERMANY

FABRIZIO ZANOTTI BEATS STENSON IN

PLAY-OFF CLIMAX TO BMW OPEN

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS REPORT

Fabrizio Zanotti became the first Paraguayan to  win on The European Tour in the most dramatic fashion after a four-man play-off at Gut Lärchenhof ended in a two-man shoot-out with the 31 year old taking down World No 2 Henrik Stenson at the fifth extra hole in the BMW International Open in Germany today.
After an unbelievable final round that at one point saw 19 players within three strokes of the lead, Zanotti carded a seven under 65 to post a clubhouse target of 19 under that was matched by Stenson (67), Grégory Havret (66) and Rafa Cabrera Bello (66).
Inseparable after 72 holes, the four went back to the 18th tee and all made par fours at the first extra hole. On returning to the 18th, Zanotti, Stenson and Cabrera Bello all made birdies to knock Havret out, before the three remaining protagonists halved the 17th in birdie threes.
Cabrera Bello then found the water on the 18th to leave Zanotti and Stenson alone on the 17th again, where the World Number Two this time found the water to allow Paraguay’s first European Tour winner to take to the podium
Key Quotes
Fabrizio Zanotti: “To be the first player from Paraguay to win on the European Tour is pretty huge I think.  I think in Paraguay, everybody is going to be very happy with me.  Everybody was expecting a lot from me in Paraguay, so I think it's going to be a great day.  I feel very happy. This is a moment I've been waiting for a long time.
“The play-off, I think it was great, and in the first hole, I made a great putt and on the second again.  When Henrik hit into the water on the fifth extra hole I changed club. I was going to hit driver but when I saw the ball go to the water, I changed it and just aimed to that left bunker on the green. Thankfully it worked out perfectly.”

Becomes the 39th different qualifying school graduate to win the year after graduation in European Tour history.
Gains his largest European Tour prize of €333,000

NEWMACHAR BOY SCORES A HOME WIN FOR FOUNDATION

ADAM FISHER WINS PAUL LAWRIE

JUNIOR JUG BY TWO AT LADYBANK

Newmachar's Adam Fisher, one of three Paul Lawrie Foundation-supported young amateurs,   sealed victory in the PLF Junior Jug 54-hole tournament at Ladybank Golf Club, Fife  with a closing round of three-over-par 74 for a two-under final aggregate of 211.
Fisher was put under pressure by Cawder's Calum Fyfe, who got to four-under for his round at the 16th hole
Adam struggled on the front nine, running up an 8 at the par-5 second. That  put him out of sort.s for some time.
Fisher steadied the ship on his closing nine, carding birdies at the short12th and tough 17th hole to secure a two-stroke victory over from runner-up Fyfe whose 68 was the only sub-par score in the final round.
Defending champion Murray Naysmith (Marriorr Dalmahoy) had been making a good job of his defence with an outward 35  but gave away too many shots over the closing holes and finished third on 215.

NIGHTMARE THIRD-ROUND 78 BY RUSSELL KNOX

BETHESDA, Maryland -- Congressional Country Club doled out birdies grudgingly and bogeys with abandon on Saturday.
This may have been the third round of the Quicken Loans National but the way the venerable Blue Course played was worthy of a major championship -- and Congressional has hosted four.
Only 13 players bettered par in the third round -- but none of the four overnight leaders managed it. Patrick Reed's round of 71 was the best of that group and with it he extended his lead to two strokes entering the final round.
Marc Leishman, who was one of the three tied with Reed at the start of the round, posted a 73 that left him tied at 4 under with Seung-Yul Noh and Freddie Jacobson.
Noh's round of 66 was the best of the day -- by two strokes -- and he was done 18 minutes after the final group left the first tee.
"I actually said to Matty, my caddie, ... on the back nine, 'It feels a bit like a U.S. Open' because there were a few pins that you really didn't have a chance to get at," Leishman said. "But I think that's good.
"It's a tough golf course. It's long; if you're not in the fairway, you have no chance. If you are on the fairway and you hit a good shot, you can make birdie. Yeah, I think it's great to change it up like that occasionally where par is a really good score."
A total of 19 players will start the final round within five strokes of Reed's lead, including 2013 U.S. Open champ Justin Rose at 3 under and defending champ Bill Haas, who is another shot back.
Reed is a formidable front-runner, though -- the 23-year-old has won each of the three times he's held the 54-hole lead.
"That was one of those days that we were able to grind it out," he said. "It played tough. It seemed to get firmer and faster as the day went on, and you know, it was just a lot of adjusting you had to do during the round. You know, we handled it pretty well and luckily we have the lead going into tomorrow."
Leishman said the crusty greens were getting that "bluish color." And the lush rough is nothing short of brutal, making players try to minimize the errors, according to Reed. Shots that would have stopped earlier in the week "just seemed to bound and just keep going," the leader added.
No wonder the scoring average on Saturday was the highest of the week at 1.480 over par. As far as Sunday is concerned? Well, Rose, who won the 2010 Quicken Loans National, would like nothing better than to see the firm, fast conditions continue.
"The only fear I have is it's such a bunched leaderboard that if they dump some water on the golf course and we still get a hot day like we did today, someone could really come out early tomorrow and post a number, which I think won't really suit the leaders too much," he said.
"Obviously I'd be a fan of them letting them go a little bit and making this a tough tournament and sort of having another U.S. Open I feel like. That would be my wish right now. ... It's definitely a test. It was fun."
SCOTSWATCH: Russell Knox had a nightmare round of 78 on Saturday and dropped to a share of 62nd place on 218. The Inverness exile had a triple bogey 8 at the long ninth and a double bogey 5 at the short 10th with bogeys coming at the first, fourth, 14th and 16th. He did birdie the fifth and 18th.
