NORTH-EAST ALLIANCE AT NEWMACHAR REPORT, SCORES

 PAUL LAWRIE SHOWS HIS CLASS WITH 

A 68 - AND A £500 DONATION

On a day when there were more than 20 returns in a field of 94, so testing was the Newmachar Hawkshill course - no run, a bit of a breeze, the usual trees - Paul Lawrie showed his European Tour class to cruise round in four-under-par 68, without a single bogey, and birdies at three par-5 holes, the second, the eighth and 16th plus the par-4 17th in halves of 34.
That won Paul the £140 top scratch prize by the comfortable margin of four strokes from Paul Lawrie Invitational winner Greg McBain (35-37) and David Leslie, the four-handicap Northern amateur who had splendid halves of 35-37.
Before he started his round Paul Lawrie had donated £500 to the North-east Alliance funds, underlining what a special place the organisation has in his affections. Paul cut his competitive teeth on the Alliance in the late 1980s-early 1990s when he was an assistant pro at Banchory and he has never forgotten his roots.
He was still playing regularly on the NE Alliance circuit when he won the Open at Carnoustie in 1999.
A special mention today to Strathlene's Charlie Tawse. His net 67 off 11 won him the Class 2 handicap section by the runaway margin of TEN strokes. Neither Dave Wilson - back in harness after having two stents inserted in arteries - nor Dave Mackay, the Alliance joint secs, could remember anyone ever winning one of the handicap sections by as much as that.
A request from the two Daves that even if a player has a No Return it is only common decency to hand in a scorecard at the admin desk after his round. If he doesn't then, Messrs Wlson and Mackay are left in limbo, not knowing whether the player has forgotten to record his score or what.
