JAMIE SAVAGE WINS IRISH 

AMATEUR STROKE-PLAY

Cawder's Jamie Savage is the new Irish men's amateur open stroke-play champion. He won the title at Royal Dublin Golf Club today with a total of 288 - the only man in a huge, star-studded field to finish with a level par aggregate after four testing rounds
Savage finished two shots clear of a quartet of players that included Irish close champion and Stirling University student Cormac Sharvin and the long time leader, Gary McDermott from Carton House.
The Scot's second-round 68, after an opening 74, put him in a strong position at halfway but after a 75 in the third round, he need something close to par to clinch victory over the final 18 holes - which he did.
Savage's final round of 71 featured an impressive level par back nine, and clinched a first major international win for Jamie, a 19-year-old who is coached by Stewart Savage - his father - who is professional at Dalmuir golf club.
A member of the SGU's National transitional squad, Savage is the first Scot to lift the Irish title since Gavin Dear in 2009. Indeed,  Savage is the first Scot to win a premier 72-hole stroke play event on the GB and I circuit since Dear's victory in the same event.
Next best Scot at Royal Dublin was Alexander Culverwell (Dunbar), last year's Scottish amateur champion. He had rounds of 70, 73, 77 and 75 to share 11th place on 295.
Royal Aberdeen's Nick Macandrew, winner of the Battle Trophy at Crail earlier this season,
made the top 20 with an aggregate of 298 (75-77-76-75) for joint 18th place.
