CITY OF ABERDEEN DOUBLE FOURSOMES FOR MAITLAND SHIELD TOURNAMENT

NIGG BAY'S NARROW WIN OVER
BANCHORY AT STONEHAVEN

Nigg Bay, host club Stonehaven and Newmachar took their places in the quarter finals of the City of Aberdeen men's double foursomes match-play golf tournament for the Maitland Shield tonight with differing degrees of comfort.
While the Balnagask quartet squeezed through against Banchory by one hole and Newmachar had an advantage of only two holes over Hazlehead, Stonehaven didn’t even have to turn up to see off Auchmill.
The Aberdeen side were ten holes down when fog disrupted the play on Tuesday night and, understandably, decided to concede this evening.
The competition provides a difficult format for major fightbacks, particularly when against a host team who know their course.
Thankfully clear blue skies greeted the players last night but a cold north-east wind made conditions tricky on the fast-running course.
Banchory first pair, Adam Lindsay and Alasdair Ramage,  would certainly have welcomed a thick mist descending to cover their embarrassment.
They restarted their interrupted match one down on the 13th tee and lost every hole thereafter to par, except for the par five 16th, which was halved in birdies.
Steve Jamieson and Ian Welsh, steadiness personified, couldn’t believe their luck to finish six up.
Meanwhile Jack Harling and Roy Black were doing their level best to turn the tide for Banchory but even winning 16, 17 and 18 against Nicky Slater and Ryan Forbes left them one hole short.
Newmachar, on the other hand, had their second pair to thank for their win over Hazlehead.
Euan Kennedy, a former Stonehaven Club champion and joint course record holder, put his local knowledge to the best of use and he and partner Chris Simpson, three up from the night before, increased their
advantage to five holes over Brian Nicolson, who brought in his big brother John as a substitute for the unavailable Scott Mackie.
That  lead proved crucial as Newmachar’s first pair, Mike Lynch and Calvin Cheyne, faded badly, losing 15, 17 and 18 to pars against the steady Greig Kennedy and Scott Robertson.
