FOURTH SEED NAYSMITH OUT AFTER

LOSING LAST SEVEN HOLES IN A ROW

Glenbervie’s Calum Bauchop produced an astonishing comeback to claim a significant scalp at the Scottish Boys Championship at West Kilbride, winning the last seven holes to oust fourth seed Murray Naysmith.
Playing in the event for the first time, the five-handicapper stormed into the last-32 after a performance that left him virtually speechless.
Scotland Boys’ international Naysmith (pictured), the winner of last year’s Paul Lawrie Foundation Junior Jug, took complete charge to go six up after 11 holes.
But a combination of Bauchop’s tenacity and the erratic play of his Marriott Dalmahoy opponent saw the tables turned in remarkable fashion.
After making birdies on 13 and 16 and claiming winning pars at the other holes, Bauchop saved his crucial par from the greenside bunker at the last, rolling in an eight feet putt, while Naysmith failed to get up and down.
“I’m baffled really,” admitted 16-year-old Bauchop, who plays Innes Ferguson of Drumpellier in the fourth round. “I wasn’t angry on the 12th tee and just kept my head. I pulled a few holes back and then his head just went a little. I came here for good experience, really, and I’ve played pretty well.”

Biggest win of the week for Colin Edgar

Earlier in the day, Cawder’s Calum Fyfe was the first seed to tumble, losing out on the final hole to Fraser Kane of Kirkhill after missing a little putt on the closing green.
Avoiding such surprises were the likes of top seed Ewen Ferguson, who eased to a 5 and 4 success against Findlay Soutar from Montrose Mercantile. The British Boys champion from Bearsden lost the opening hole, but soon hit back to book his round four spot against Rob Paterson from Kilspindie, the Lothians Boys Order of Merit champion last year.
Third seed Ben Kinsley also ended the hopes of Michael Lawrie, again watched by former Open champion Paul and his wife, Marion. Lawrie came through a remarkable match in the morning when he fought back from three down after 12 to take his match with Cameron Blair from Musselburgh to extra holes.
Lawrie went slightly left off the tee at the 19th, before Blair knocked his drive out of bounds down the right. The Lothians player then shook his opponent’s hand and conceded the match, when he could have played another ball off the tee. “I’ve never heard of that happening before,” said Lawrie Snr

Irvine player Stuart Easton is in good form

Coming up against Kinsley, it was the St Andrews player who emerged victorious, winning 5&4 in a match closer than the result suggests. Kinsley almost made an ace at the short 9th, hitting the pin, and is in confident mood of going beyond his two previous semi-final appearances.
Glencruitten left-hander Robert MacIntyre, the second seed, also kept his bid firmly on track after progressing 4&3 against Hamish Mills of Cardross. Lundin’s Niall Mullen, victorious at the 20th, and Irvine’s Stuart Easton were also among those to follow suit.
Meanwhile, Lothians pair and pals Scott McCandless (Bathgate) and Christopher Curran (Harburn) meet in the fourth round today, a match that has extra spice given they have been sharing together all week in a local caravan park. “It will be a fun match,” laughed Scott.
Colin Edgar from Cochrane Castle racked up the biggest win of the week, thumping Alistair Wood of Auchterarder 9&7 before reaching the fourth round with a 19th hole triumph against Daragh Cuddihy (Gourock). Duncan McNeill of Powfoot also achieved his third straight big win to reach the fourth round and is another player to watch as the tournament reaches its business end.
