JIMMY GUNN SCORES BACK-TO-BACK WINS IN UNITED STATES

FROM THE PRESS AND JOURNAL
By DANNY LAW
Dornoch golfer Jimmy Gunn has claimed his second tournament victory in successive weeks by leading the way home in the San Juan Open.
The 32-year-old Highlander, based in the States for the past five or six years, having turned pro after he finished as leading amateur a Northern Open, had gone into the tournament full of confidence following his success at the Navajo Trail Open at Hillcrest, Durango, Colorado.
A final round of 65 gave Gunn a 16-under-par total of 268 for the 72-hole tournament at the San Juan Country Club. He finished one shot ahead of runner-up Jesse Mueller.
Gunn, who won more than £11,000 for first prize, made birdies at the 10th, 12th, 14th, 15th and 16th in a grandstand finish.
He said: "There are so many good players here and I knew the compettion was going to be like this. I really thought I'd need to birdie one of the last two holes to win."
Gunn is currently playing his trade on the All-American Gateway Tour but is confident that he can make the step up to the US PGA Tour.
"That's why we play in these tournaments. The guys here, we all know, were good enough to make the US Tour. Jesse played on the Web.com Tour a couple of years ago and made the cut at the 2012 US Open. I was even leading the US Open qualifier at Memphis after the first round this year.
"I'm really confident I will get there. A number of these guys will also."

LEE WESTWOOD WON'T PLAY AGAIN BEFORE OPEN AT MUIRFIELD

NEWS RELEASE
Two weeks prior to the Alstom Open de France, Lee Westwood has just announced his withdrawal. The 40-year-old Englishman, currently ranked 12th in the world, was one of the big names highlighting the field of the tournament's 97th edition
It is with much regret that I have decided to withdraw from this year's Alstom Open de France. A long run of events has left me fatigued and with The Open so close I have decided to get myself into the best possible condition”, said Westwood, who plays on both sides of the Atlantic this season.

“The Alstom Open de France has always been one of my favourite tournaments and I love both Paris and Versailles, so this decision was not taken lightly and I look forward to returning in the future. I would like to wish everybody connected all the very best for a successful and memorable week. I am sure it will be,” he kindly added.
Already not in the field of this week's Irish Open, Westwood will also miss the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, scheduled the week after the Alstom Open de France. The Englishman will return to competitive play at Muirfield, where the 142nd Open Championship will take place from July 18 to 21.

SCOTLAND TEAM NAMED FOR EUROPEAN BOYS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP AT MURCAR LINKS

NEWS RELEASE FROM SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
Blairgowrie’s Bradley Neil will spearhead the nation’s bid for success when the Scottish Golf Union hosts the European Boys’ Team Championship at Murcar Links next month.

Neil, the Scottish Boys champion following his win over Ewan Scott at Monifieth in April, has been named in a six-strong team for the prestigious event from 9 – 13 July.

This year’s Golf Data Lab Scottish Youths champion Robert MacIntyre (Glencruitten) and Bearsden’s Ewen Ferguson, the recent winner of the Stephen Gallacher Foundation Trophy, are also included.

In-form Calum Hill of Tantallon, the Scottish Schools champion Connor Syme (Dumfries & County) and the consistent Euan Walker (Kilmarnock Barassie) make up the team.

All the players currently feature in the top-six of the Scottish Hydro SGU Boys’ Order of Merit, with Neil the only survivor from the team that competed in Sweden last year.

The SGU are hosting the competition for the first time since it was staged at Gullane in 1998, with 16 teams set to gather in the north east for the challenge.

Scotland were last victorious in the European Boys Team Championship back in 2000, triumphing in the final against Ireland in the Netherlands.

Among the Scots’ number was Martin Laird, the former Scottish Youths champion who has since gone on to thrive in the pro ranks by winning three times on the US PGA Tour.

Murcar Links hosted last year’s Scottish Boys Championship and the European Girls Championship in 2008. The club are therefore looking forward to enhancing their reputation when Europe’s best young players meet over the 6,516-yard layout.

“We’re delighted to host the 2013 European Boys Team Championship this year at Murcar Links and a very warm welcome will be extended to all players, officials and spectators,” said David G Grant, Captain. “Let’s hope for some fine Scottish weather to enhance this great event.

“Our course provides a fair but challenging test, particularly if a little wind gets up. A little hillier than some links courses, there are some magnificent views back towards Aberdeen and we are sure all the European players will enjoy the experience of playing here.”

SCOTLAND SIX-MAN TEAM NAMED FOR EUROPEAN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP IN DENMARK

NEWS RELEASE FROM SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
Fresh from winning his first 72-hole stroke play event on the Scottish Golf Union Order of Merit, Jack McDonald is relishing Scotland’s bid for success at the European Men’s Team Championship in Denmark next month.
The Kilmarnock Barassie player, the SGU Men’s Performance Squad member who held his nerve to birdie the final hole and win the Tennant Cup by a stroke on Sunday, has been named in Scotland’s six-man team for the challenge at Silkeborg in Denmark from 9 – 13 July.
McDonald, the leader of the SGU Men’s Order of Merit and last year’s Scottish Amateur Golfer of the Year, is joined by Great Britain and Ireland cap Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie) and teenager Ewan Scott (St Andrews) in the team.
Scott, a product of the Scottish Golf Academy, is a member of the SGU Boys’ Performance Squad but has impressed playing a Men’s calendar this year before beginning college in America in August.
Dollar’s Scott Borrowman, last year’s winner of the national Order of Merit, reigning Scottish Amateur champion Grant Forrest and in-form James Ross of Royal Burgess complete the line-up.

McDonald, who played for Scotland three times at European Boys’ team level, said: “I’m looking forward to it. I think we have a very good team and we’re all playing well, as everyone has had strong finishes this season.

“The first task in Denmark is to qualify for the top flight and then I would fancy our chances in the matchplay. I don’t see why we can’t do well.”

Sixteen teams will gather at Silkeborg, a long par-72 tree-lined course in the heart of Jutland, Denmark. It is regarded as one of the finest courses in Denmark and is the home club of Danish golfing hero Thomas Bjorn.

All four home unions will bid for success at Silkeborg, along with the host nation and the likes of Spain, France, Sweden and Germany. Scotland last won the event in 2009, when they memorably added the European crown to the world team title they won in 2008.

Steve Paulding, Scottish Golf Performance Manager, added: “I’m really encouraged by the number of young players stepping up to the mark this year, especially the SGU Boys’ Squad players impressing at Men’s level.

“At the same time, there are a number of more senior members of our Men’s Squad who, having not made this team, will need to look to have stronger performances to make our Home Internationals team.”

Meanwhile, the same six players will also compete in the European Men’s Amateur Championship in August – along with Daniel Young (Craigie Hill) and the Scottish Boys champion, Bradley Neil of Blairgowrie.

The event takes place from 7 – 10 August at Real Club de Golf el Prat in Spain.

RYAN EVANS BOUNCED BACK TO WIN BERKSHIRE TROPHY

NEWS RELEASE FROM ENGLAND GOLF
Ryan Evans (Wellingborough, Northamptonshire) put the disappointment of not qualifying for the Amateur Championship behind him by winning the Berkshire Trophy at The Berkshire.

A closing round of 69 over the Red Course for 279 left him a stroke ahead of Vaughan McCall from New Zealand and two clear of Ryan Fricker (Yelverton, Devon).

Evans, a member of the England ‘A’ squad, won the South of England Amateur Championship at Walton Heath last year and has been in good form this season, finishing tied second in the St Andrews Links Trophy and joint third in the French Open Amateur Championship.

So a win was on the horizon when he arrived at The Berkshire and an opening 68 over the Red left the 26 year old a shot behind McCall.

He was still a shot behind McCall at halfway after both fired 72 over the Blue Course but the Kiwi was joined at the top of the leaderboard by Robbie Busher (Salisbury & South Wilts, Wiltshire), who signed for a best-of-the-day 67 after an opening t that stage Evans was sharing third spot with 2012 British Boys champion Matthew Fitzpatrick (Hallamshire, Yorkshire), who shot 68, but a 70 back on the Red in Round Three saw Evans one ahead as McCall who returned another 72, while Fitzpatrick and Busher fell back with 74 and 78 respectively.

The final round was again over the Red with Fricker who returned the best card with 68 for third place, while Evans and McCall both shot 69, leaving the Englishman one clear and the champion.

Leading final scores:
279 R Evans (Wellingborough) 68 72 70 69
280 V McCall (New Zealand) 67 72 72 69
281 R Fricker (Yelverton) 73 69 71 68
