SCOTLAND TEAM NAMED FOR EUROPEAN BOYS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP AT MURCAR LINKS
NEWS RELEASE FROM SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
Blairgowrie’s
Bradley Neil will spearhead the nation’s bid for success when the
Scottish Golf Union hosts the European Boys’ Team Championship at Murcar
Links next month.
Neil,
the Scottish Boys champion following his win over Ewan Scott at
Monifieth in April, has been named in a six-strong team for the
prestigious event from 9 – 13 July.
This
year’s Golf Data Lab Scottish Youths champion Robert MacIntyre
(Glencruitten) and Bearsden’s Ewen Ferguson, the recent winner of the
Stephen Gallacher Foundation Trophy,
are also included.
In-form
Calum Hill of Tantallon, the Scottish Schools champion Connor Syme
(Dumfries & County) and the consistent Euan Walker (Kilmarnock
Barassie) make up the team.
All
the players currently feature in the top-six of the Scottish Hydro SGU
Boys’ Order of Merit, with Neil the only survivor from the team that
competed in Sweden last year.
The
SGU are hosting the competition for the first time since it was staged
at Gullane in 1998, with 16 teams set to gather in the north east for
the challenge.
Scotland
were last victorious in the European Boys Team Championship back in
2000, triumphing in the final against Ireland in the Netherlands.
Among
the Scots’ number was Martin Laird, the former Scottish Youths champion
who has since gone on to thrive in the pro ranks by winning three times
on the US PGA Tour.
Murcar
Links hosted last year’s Scottish Boys Championship and the European
Girls Championship in 2008. The club are therefore looking forward to
enhancing their reputation
when Europe’s best young players meet over the 6,516-yard layout.
“We’re
delighted to host the 2013 European Boys Team Championship this year at
Murcar Links and a very warm welcome will be extended to all players,
officials and spectators,”
said David G Grant, Captain. “Let’s hope for some fine Scottish weather
to enhance this great event.
“Our
course provides a fair but challenging test, particularly if a little
wind gets up. A little hillier than some links courses, there are some
magnificent views back towards
Aberdeen and we are sure all the European players will enjoy the
experience of playing here.”
