UNITED STATES MARCH ON TO RECORD A 17-9 VICTORY IN WALKER CUP

Not much for the Union Jack brigade to cheer as Great Britain and Ireland head for a heavy defeat in defence of the Walker Cup. Today's picture by Gillian Kirkwood

United States won back the Walker Cup from the grasp of Great Britain and Ireland at the National Golf Links of America, Southampton in New York State.
The final scoreline was: USA 17, GB and Ireland 9.
At the end of Saturday's play, the halfway point in the two-day match, the United States led 8-4.
The Sunday morning foursomes were shared at two wins apiece, making the overall scoreline: USA 10, GB and Ireland 6.
The closing 10 Sunday afternoon singles just about summed up the gap between the sides with the Americans winning seven of them and GB and Ireland only three.
GB and I's three Sunday wins came from Matthew Fitzpatrick (the Englishman who holds the US amateur title), Callum Shinkwin and US-based Irishman Kevin Phelan.
In the final singles to finish, Ireland's Gavin Moynihan, was all square after 15 holes but lost. That again summed up a most disappoinint GB and I performance.
Never has so little been delivered by a GB and I team that was considered to be better than the one that beat the Americans at Royal Aberdeen two years ago.
What was the difference? Well, the GB and I team that won in 2011 had some Scots in it!
