SOLID START BY SCOTS BOYS AT MURCAR LINKS

Scotland acquitted themselves well on the opening day of the European boys' team golf championship over the baked-hard and fast-running Murcar Links in the first of two stroke-playing qualifying rounds to decide the eight contestants for the championship match-play flight.
With the five best scores daily from a team of six players counting, Italy lead overnight on level par 355, thanks to three individual rounds of one-under-par 70 (Renate Paratore, Teodoro Soldati and Edoardo Lipparelli).

The Scots are lying second on four-over-359, for which the foundation was laid by a 70 from professional's son and Scottish schoolboys champion Connor Syme (Dumfries and Co) and a par 71 from Ewen Ferguson (Bearsden).
France, pre-tournament favourites on paper, are in third place on 364, which included a hole in one at the 12th by Pierre Mazier.
England did not do as well as expected. Their 12-over 367 tally leaves them in joint fourth place alongside Denmark.
Ireland totalled 368 to be sharing sixth place with Norway.

Ireland's scores were:
Gareth Lappin 72; Paul McBride 72; Robin Dawson 73; Sean Flanagan 74; James Sugrue 77; Alex Myles 79.
Connor Syme's 70 (35-35) included an eagle 3 at the 14th and a double bogey 5 at the short 12th.
Ferguson's 71 was made up of halves of 34-37, a bogey at the last costing him a sub-par start to the tournament.
Ewan Walker (Kilmarnock Barassie) ran up a double bogey 7 at the 14th but five birdies in all enabled him to salvage a round of 72, the same as Calum Hill (Tantallon) whose two birdies came in an outward 35.
Robert MacIntyre (Glencruitten) had a double bogey 6 and an eagle 2 within the space of three holes in his 74 (38-36). The seventh was the hole that saw him slip two over par and the ninth was his highlight hole.
The non-counting Scots' score was a 75 (37-38) by Ben Kinsley (St Andrews).

The England scorers were:
70 Ashton Turner; 73 Marco Penge; 74 Jack Singh-Brar; 75 Bradley Moore and Harry Ellis; 79 Adam Chapman.
