MAGNUS CARLSSON GOES TWO CLEAR WITH A 65 IN NORDEA MASTERS

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
A blistering seven under par 65 saw Magnus A Carlsson establish a two-shot first round lead at the Nordea Masters in his native Sweden.
Carlsson, looking to become the third consecutive Swede to win this event since it moved to Bro Hof Slott after Richard S Johnson and Alex Noren’s victories in 2010 and 2011, carded eight birdies and dropped his only shot of the day at the 18th.
The 31 year old, whose runner-up finish in Madeira last month matched his best European Tour performance, had five birdies in six holes from the seventh as he made a dazzling burst around the turn.
“Now I’m focusing on having fun out there on the course,” said Carlsson.
“To be on top of the leaderboard at a European Tour event - I can’t be anything else other than very satisfied, especially on a tough course like this one here at Bro Hof.
“Now I just want to go home and get some rest to be prepared for tomorrow and the rest of the tournament.”
Richard Bland, another player seeking his maiden European Tour title, set the morning pace with his five under 67.
The Englishman, who only retained his European Tour playing privileges for this season via a trip to Qualifying School, recovered from a bogey at his first hole, the tenth, and a double bogey seven at the 13th with eight birdies.
Two of those came in the holes between his blemishes, with four birdies in a row from the 16th and further gains at the third and sixth.
“To shoot five under round this course at anytime is good,” said Bland, playing in his 275th European Tour event.
“I had a bit of an up and down start but I kicked it into gear around the turn, which made the day really. I played the front nine, which was my back nine, pretty solid, so the game’s in pretty good shape.”
He was joined in the afternoon by compatriot Matthew Baldwin, Spain’s Ignacio Garrido and another home favourite, Peter Hanson – who holed from ten feet at the 14th and chipped to three feet at the next for two of his six birdies.
“It was good, I was a bit nervous teeing off,” said Ryder Cup star Hanson. “I haven’t been too happy with my game lately so it’s nice to get off to a good start.”
World Number Three Lee Westwood completed a four under 68 despite three-putting twice, while his Ryder Cup teammate Sergio Garcia mixed six birdies and three bogeys in his 69, the highlight a 25 footer at the last.
“I played quite nicely,” said Westwood. “You have to hit the fairways, but if you do then you’ve got a good chance. The rough is fairly penal.
“It’s long so you have to hit driver a lot of the time - it’s just a good test.”
There were some brilliant shots as great rounds, Rafael Cabrera-Bello coming within an inch of an ace at the par three seventh during his round of 71.

SCOTLAND NAME TEAM FOR PRESTWICK TEST AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA

MEDIA RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
The leading male amateurs from Scotland and South Africa will meet in a return Test Match over the historic links of Prestwick next week, with the home side seeking back-to-back victories in the international contest.
Following the conclusion of the St Andrews Links Trophy this weekend, the six-man sides will head for Ayrshire for the two-day Test next Wednesday and Thursday (13-14 June).
It is the first time the teams have met on Scottish soil, but the fourth occasion in all, as a result of the ever-growing links at amateur level between both countries.
Thanks to the fantastic support of sponsor Aberdeen Asset Management and South African businessman Johann Rupert, the Scottish Golf Union’s (SGU) National Men’s Squad have travelled to the Rainbow Nation for a winter performance programme in recent years.
As well as competing in events such as the South African Stroke Play Championship, the South African Amateur Championship and the Northern Amateur Open, where Scottish players have enjoyed notable
success, the countries have met in three annual Test matches since 2010.
With a number of South Africans currently in Scotland, competing in last weekend’s Carrick Neill Scottish Stroke Play Championship at Kilmarnock (Barassie) and the forthcoming St Andrews Links and The Amateur Championship, the teams will lock horns again at Prestwick.
After defeating the South Africans at Leopard Creek in February, four members of the SGU National Men’s Squad will renew rivalries and seek to emerge victorious against their counterparts.
The quartet, all selector’s picks, include South African Amateur champion Brian Soutar (Leven GS), two-time domestic winner in 2012, Balmore’s Fraser McKenna, reigning SGU Men’s Order of Merit champion James White (Lundin) and Kirkhill’s Paul Shields, joint-winner of the Northern Amateur Open in March.
The team is complemented by the automatic selection of the current leading two players on the SGU Men’s Order of Merit (following the Scottish Stroke Play), Glenbervie’s Graeme Robertson and Adam Dunton (McDonald Ellon). Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm) has been chosen as the first reserve.
Meanwhile, the South African side features two players in the top 100 of the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR). They are teenage star Haydn Portesous, who surged to finish joint-runner-up at the Stroke Play on Sunday, and another talented player, Charles du Plessis. Drikus Bruyns, Gert Myburgh, Shaun Smith and Jean-Paul Strydom complete their line-up.
Interestingly, Porteous has a strong Scottish heritage with his father born in Falkirk and living in Dollar until 1974 before emigrating. Haydn’s grandfather was also born and raised in Leven and played his golf at Lundin Links.
The format for the Test Match will see three foursomes and six singles ties on each day. The team that reaches 9.5 points will be victorious.
National Coach Ian Rae said: “As the South African players are over for a month for the various individual events on the calendar, we thought it was a great opportunity for both sides to play in another match.
“Prestwick is a traditional links test and was the venue for the first-ever Open Championship in 1860. It will therefore provide a great experience for everyone, especially the South African players.
“We have picked a strong Scottish team and we approach the Test with confidence. We have good experience within the side and players who all know how to win on big occasions.”
The match tees off at 8am on both Wednesday and Thursday next week with free entrance for spectators, who are encouraged to come along and support the players. The Scotland team is sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management and TaylorMade-adidas Golf.

HENRY HUNGRY FOR MORE CHALLENGE TOUR SUCCESS

FROM MICHAEL GIBBONS
Fresh from his third place finish in Spain last week, Scott Henry will lead the Challenge Tour’s ten-strong tartan contingent into battle in Austria this week at the Kärnten Golf Open presented by Mazda.
Henry, who joined the Challenge Tour this year following last year’s success on the third-tier Alps Tour, fired a brilliant final round 64 in Spain last week to take third place and leap to 21st position on the Challenge Tour Rankings – one spot outside the all-important top 20 that will earn European Tour cards at the end of the season.
The 25 year old from Clydebank, a former Scottish Strokeplay champion, is just one place behind Callum Macaulay and two ahead of Chris Doak in the Rankings, and both men are with Henry at the Golf Club Klagenfurt-Seltenheim in the stunning Carinthia region of south east Austria for the €160,000 event.
The other seven Scots in the field – James Byrne, Gavin Dear, Jack Doherty, Scott Drummond, David Law, Andrew McArthur and Jamie McLeary – are all looking to kick-start their seasons with the kind of strong performance that would propel them alongside Henry, Macaulay and Doak at the business end of the Rankings.

US OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFYING LATEST NEWS

FROM ESPN.COM WEBSITE
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Tommy Biershenk earned his first trip to the U.S. Open on Tuesday, making 11 birdies in two rounds to take one of nine spots from the final sectional qualifier.
The qualifier at Germantown Country Club was delayed one day by heavy rain. Biershenk opened with a 67 and followed with a 66. Stephen Ames, who has missed six of his past eight cuts on the PGA Tour, picked a good time to turn it around. He had rounds of 65-69 and returns to the U.S. Open for the first time in three years. Other PGA Tour players who qualified were Joe Ogilvie, Joe Durant, Bill Lunde and Hunter Haas.
Ogilvie tweeted, "I don't often drink beer, but when I qualify for the US Open, I drink Dos Equis. Stay thirsty my friends."
Hunter Hamrick of Alabama, coming off a team loss at the NCAA championship over the weekend, earned a spot next week at The Olympic Club. His teammate wasn't as fortunate. Bobby Wyatt got into a 3-for-1 playoff but was eliminated quickly. Robert Castro earned the final spot over Kyle Thompson with a par on the fourth extra hole.
Among those who failed to qualify were David Duval, Justin Leonard and Lee Janzen, a two-time U.S. Open champion who rallied to beat the late Payne Stewart the last time the U.S. Open was held at Olympic Club in 1998.
In golf's version of the Civil War rivalry earlier Tuesday, Nick Sherwood of Oregon State outlasted Oregon's Daniel Miernicki in a playoff that went three holes to determine the final spot. Casey Martin, who fought for the right to ride a cart because of a severe circulatory disorder in his right leg, earned the other spot Monday night with a 5-foot par on the last hole. Martin now is Oregon's golf coach.
It took two days to complete 11 qualifiers across the country because of the rain in Memphis. Nearly 800 players competed for 58 spots, and now attention turns to the alternate list.
The U.S. Open set aside five spots in case players not already eligible moved into the top 60 in the world ranking on Sunday. Spencer Levin, who lost a 54-hole lead at the Memorial, is at No. 61 and is playing the St. Jude Classic. Three other players in range of the top 60 -- Johnson Wagner, Greg Chalmers and Memorial runner-up Rory Sabbatini -- are not playing.
If no one moves into the top 60, the first five alternates would get into The Olympic Club. The alternate list was not expected until later in the week.
