GAVIN DEAR WINS $525 AS RUNNER-UP IN FLORIDA ONE-DAY EVENT

Murrayshall's Gavin Dear has returned for a busman's holiday to his US college roots in Florida - he was a student at Lynn University, Boca Raton - to earn a fistful of dollars.
The Minor Golf League, which operates in southern Florida and specialises in running three or four one-day events 46 weeks of the year, has been renamed the GOLFslinger.com Tour and Gavin finished second in a field of 25 on Sunday.
The Scone man earned $525 for a 71 which was only one shot more than the winner of the $1,000 prize, Ben Silverman, originally from Ontario, Canada.
Silverman has now won $52,690 in total on the GOLF slinger.com Tour and its predecessor in the past year or two.
Greg Duncan from Edinburgh finished T8 with a 73 and earned $102.
That event was played at Jacaranda Golf Club.
The previous week, at Ocean Breeze GC, Boca Raton, Gavin Dear finished T15 with a 74 and earned $34 25cents.

+Entry fee for a GOLFslinger.com Tour event is usually $200. You cannot play in an event unless you are a member. You can take out membership for a single event at $50 and it rises - but not extortionately - for a month's membership or longer.
Amateur entries are accepted but only if they have a handicap of six or under. Prize vouchers are given to amateurs under USGA rules.
Girls/ladies are also allowed to enter but seem to prefer Florida's ladies-only SunCoast Series, which runs three-round events over a limited spring-summer-period, or the Cactus Tour in Arizona.
