PAUL DOHERTY LEADS SCOTS AT WOBURN

None of the five Scots in the field of 56 played themselves out of contention over the first round for the first prize of £15,000 in the 54-hole PGA EuroPro Tour championship over the Marquess Course at Woburn Golf Club.
Their scores ranged from 70 to 72.
Former Scottish boys match-play champion Paul Doherty is the best placed with a two-under-par 70 which sees him in joint second place, one shot behind the leader, Englishman Paul Maddy.
South Wales-based Doherty had five birdies, a double bogey at the 12th, and a shot dropped at the short 13th in halves of 33 and 37.
Elliot Saltman (Archerfield Links), Wallace Booth (Comrie) and Duncan Stewart (Grantown on Spey) joint seventh on 71.
Saltman had three birdies in a row from fifth, and four in all in an outward 33 but he had none at all in an inward 38.
Booth, through to the Final Stage of the European Tour Q School, had the lowest outward half of five-under-par 31 with birdies at the first, third, long seventh, short eighth and ninth but he took 40 blows to come home, including a double bogey 6 at the 18th.
Stewart, who has already claimed one of the Challenge Tour places reserved for the first five in the EuroPro Tour's Order of Merit, had steady halves of 34-37.
Chris Kelly (Cawder) had a 72 (34-38) with four birdies and four bogeys. He is sharing 14th place in a field of 56.
First prize is £15,000.
