A FEW DOLLARS MORE FOR JIMMY GUNN IN ARIZONA

Jimmy Gunn from Dornoch finished joint sixth in the one-round All-American Professional Golf Tour event at Club West Golf Club, Phoenix in Arizona today.
Gunn, who has been campaigning on the American satellite tours for two or three years, had a five-under-par 67 and earned $487.50, bringing his earnings on this tour up to $3,212 from the first three events of their winter schedule - it doesn't snow in Arizona!
Gunn was joint fourth and joint third in his first two outings.
Winner of the third event was American Tommy Medina with a nine-under-par 63, two ahead of compatriot Jesse Mueller. Medina's prize was $1,390.

IRISH OPEN COULD BE ON ITS WAY TO ROYAL PORTRUSH .. SOON

FROM THE BBC SPORT.COM WEBSITE
The prospect of the Irish Open being staged at Royal Portrush in 2013 has moved a step closer with the publication of the Stormont Executive's programme for government.
A pledge to bring a major golf tournament to Northern Ireland is one of more than 70 commitments made.
It is believed that an agreement may be made to play the event in Northern Ireland once every five years.
The event could provide a showcase for a possible bid to host the Open.
Major winners Graeme McDowell and Darren Clarke, who both have strong links with the north coast, have already agreed to act in an ambassadorial role for Royal Portrush, which will celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2013.
Soon after Clarke's Open triumph in July the Stormont Executive indicated that it would provide "substantial backing" for a European Tour event to be played at the venue.
The Open Championship was last played at Portrush in 1951 when Max Faulkner was the winner.

DRUMMOND AND McARTHUR TOP 20 FINISH - BUT AT A COST

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
One-time PGA champion Scott Drummond and Glasgow's Andrew McArthur finished in the top 20 of the Spanish Hi5 Pro Tour's Altorreal Open in Murcia - but almost certainly did not cover their expenses for the week.
Anglo-Scot Drummond, originally from Fife, earned 318 Euros for a joint 13th finish with scores of 70, 71 and 73 for a total of two-under-par 214. He had a chance of a top 10 finish and a bigger payslip after birdieng the 11th to get back to one over par for the day but could not get another birdie putt to drop and parred the last seven holes.
McArthur, past Scottish amateur champion from Windyhill, earned 170 Euros for a joint 16th place finish with a one-under total of 215, made up of rounds of 74, 69 and 72. Three birdies on the last day were cancelled out by three bogeys, two of them within his last five holes.
Mark Rae (Alyth) and Murrayfield's Mark Kerr were out of pocket for the week because they finished out of the money. Rae had rounds of 76, 74 and 78 for joint 39th place on 12-over-par 228 while Kerr finished in joint 41st place on 13-over 229 with very disappointing scores of 79, 74 and 76.
James Ruth, 26-year-old from Plymouth led from pillar to post to win the 4,552 Euros top prize by three shots with scores of 64, 68 and 72 for 204.
Like the majority of satellite circuits, unless you are a winner or finish in the top three, a player is hard pushed to cover his costs.

MONTY PRAISES SGU WARM-WEATHER TRAINING PROGRAMME

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
Colin Montgomerie, Europe’s victorious Ryder Cup captain, has given his backing to the warm weather training trip Scotland’s leading male amateurs will make when they depart for Abu Dhabi later this week.
Following the success of the 2010 winter camp, a new-look squad of 10 players will fly to the Middle East on Friday (18 November, 2011) to be based at the stunning Yas Links Golf Club in Abu Dhabi and the Centro Yas Island Hotel, who together with long-standing supporter of the SGU, Aberdeen Asset Management, are sponsoring the four-week training programme.
The group, which includes four members of the Scotland boys' squad who will travel for 10 days only, will work on fitness and technical aspects of their game for an extended period at the world-class facilities, as well as benefiting from the fantastic weather.
Key members of the SGU coaching team – National Coach Ian Rae, Under-18s coach Neil Marr and Performance Manager Steve Paulding – will support the players, with input from expert staff at the sportscotland Institute of Sport.
Alex Salmond, Scotland’s First Minister, has already given his support to the trip as he seeks to forge ever-strengthening links between Scotland and the UAE in a golfing context, and Monty has also voiced his approval.
Speaking recently to Scotland’s amateur squad, the eight-time European Tour Order of Merit winner says the chance for the players to improve their games and fitness in sunny climes during the winter months is one they should make the most of.
Indeed, he admits it’s an opportunity he would have loved at this time of year – rather than having to turn the heating up in his garage!
The 48-year-old, who enjoyed a prolific amateur career and played on Eisenhower Trophy, Home Internationals and Walker Cup teams, said: “It’s fantastic, this winter training programme.
“I never had it. You should grab the opportunity with both hands. Warm weather training? In my day, it meant turning the heater up in the garage.
“To learn to live out of a suitcase, be in an environment away from home, experience the boredom that can entail at times, can only be good.”
Montgomerie, who led Europe to a nail-biting success over the USA at Celtic Manor in 2010, added: “There is no substitute for hard work, particularly at this time of year. If you’re not putting in the work, you can bet countless other guys across the globe are.
“Jack Nicklaus, the greatest ever, never, ever gave up. He was always working on his game, he was 100 per cent on every shot.
“It’s also become a fitness game. The fitter the better, we should say. Tiger (Woods) took it to new levels. Golf is a classic case. Players are fitter now, so the warm weather training will also help in that regard.”

FLYING DUTCHMAN LUITEN LEADS WEATHER-HIT ISKANDAR OPEN

FROM THE ASIAN TOUR WEBSITEJohor Bahru, Malaysia: Joost Luiten of the Netherlands continued his rich of form by shooting a scintillating eight-under-par 63 to take the clubhouse lead in the first round of the weather-interrupted Iskandar Johor Open today.
Luiten, who finished in tied fifth in Singapore last week, birdied the last hole to hold a one shot lead over title holder and three-time Major champion Padraig Harrington of Ireland, Australian Marcus Fraser, who finished second on last year’s Asian Tour Order of Merit and Frenchman Gregory Bourdy at the Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club.
Charlie Wi of Korea, a seven-time winner in the region, led the Asian charge with a 66 to share fifth place with James Morrison of England and Nicolas Meitinger of Germany at the US$2 million event sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.
The first round was called off for the day an hour after lightning stopped play at 4.22pm. No players from the afternoon session finished their round, meaning 78 players will return at 7.20 am on Friday to resume play.
Luiten, who started on the 10th tee, peppered the flags with accurate approach shots and was rewarded with four straight birdies starting from the 15th hole.
“Yeah, that really got me going. Most of the putts were from only around three metres, so I was putting it pretty close. My longest putt was on my last hole, from around five metres. So that was a great way to finish,” said Luiten, who is searching for his first European Tour title.
“I played really well in Singapore, which gave me a lot of confidence to carry into this week. I’ve been putting very well lately. I made some nice putts, and hopefully that can continue in the next few days,” said the 25-year-old.
Harrington ignited his title defence with a superb 40 feet chip-in eagle on the 13th hole before adding six more birdies against one bogey.
“That was the kick-start I needed. I’d given myself a few chances early on, but didn’t hole the putts. So in the back of your mind you start to think that it might be one of those rounds which gets away from you, even though I’d struck the ball quite nicely. But then when I holed that chip, I started thinking that it might go my way after all,” said Harrington.
“I left a few shots out there, but I’m still very happy with the score. I’m a bit surprised the scoring in general isn’t a little lower than it is. In our group, we must’ve made at least 25 birdies between us, and in some ways we fed off each other,” said Harrington, who played with Wi and Lu Wei-chih of Chinese Taipei.
Fraser, winner of the 2010 Ballantine’s Championship in Korea, renewed his love for Asia in a flawless round highlighted by an eagle three on the 18th hole which he sank from 15 feet.
It has been a bittersweet season for Fraser who went through a neck surgery earlier in the year and welcomed a baby girl (Lily) to his family in July.
“It feels like I’m playing to about 80 or 90% of my potential. My injury is something that I have to monitor but it feels pretty good at the moment. Normally I would play about 20 or 25 tournaments by this time of the year but I welcomed my second child in the middle of the year and that has been pretty exciting,” said Fraser.
Korean Wi, a regular on the PGA Tour, birdied the opening hole before dropping two shots in the next two holes. He recovered with four straight birdies from the 13th hole but the highlight came when he holed out from the green side bunker on the second hole from 15 yards.
“I was very lucky with that! It was a very tough hole. When I had those two bogeys I was like, ‘Oh boy, I hope I don’t let this round get away.’ But I was able to make some birdies and I was pretty pleased,” said Wi.

UNITED STATES LEAD 4-2 IN PRESIDENTS CUP BUT TIGER TANNED

FROM THE US PGA TOUR WEBSITE
MELBOURNE, Australia – The Americans dominated in three of Thursday’s six matches on the first day of The Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne.
But it was the two half-points earned with late-match comebacks that left them feeling very good after the first day of foursomes.
The Americans will enter Friday’s four-ball matches with a 4-2 lead over the International team.

TO VIEW THURSDAY'S RESULTS

The rallies by Bill Haas-Nick Watney and Matt Kuchar-Dustin Johnson to earn half-points felt like victories, considering that neither American pair led at any time in their respective matches.
And it offset the shocking 7 and 6 loss suffered by Tiger Woods-Steve Stricker to K J Choi-Adam Scott, the only International win on the day.
Winning on the American side were Bubba Watson-Webb Simpson, Jim Furyk-Phil Mickelson and Hunter Mahan-David Toms. None of those three matches reached the 17th hole.
The American duo of Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar rallied by winning the last two holes with pars to forge a half-point against the International pair of Jason Day and Aaron Baddeley.
Match 3 was the last completed match of the day, as the Americans took a 4-2 lead after the first day of matches.
It was a tough half-point for the Aussie duo, who never trailed in the match and were three up as late as the 11th hole. But they stumbled down the stretch, losing three holes with bogeys as the Americans shot even-par golf on the last six holes.
The Internationals still were two up going into the 17th, but they bogeyed the last two holes. Baddleley missed a 10-foot putt for par at the 17th that would’ve won the match, then followed with a poor tee shot at the 18th.
“We just hung in there all day, kept fighting and came up with a half-point,” said Johnson, who made a clutch four-footer for par to win the 18th hole.

FRIDAY'S FOUR-BALL PAIRINGS
Here are the pairings for the six matches for Friday’s four-ball session at The Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne.
The pairings are listed in their announced order, as each captain alternates in making the first pick for each match:

MATCH 1 – Bubba Watson-Webb Simpson, U.S. vs. Ernie Els-Ryo Ishikawa, International
MATCH 2 – Jason Day-Aaron Baddeley, International vs. Tiger Woods-Dustin Johnson, U.S.
MATCH 3 – Phil Mickelson-Jim Furyk, U.S. vs. Adam Scott-K.T. Kim, International
MATCH 4 – Geoff Ogilvy-K.J. Choi, International vs. Bill Haas-Nick Watney, U.S.
MATCH 5 – Steve Stricker-Matt Kuchar, U.S. vs. Y.E. Yang-Robert Allenby, International
MATCH 6 – Charl Schwartzel-Retief Goosen, International vs. Hunter Mahan-David Toms

U S team captain Fred Couples said the plan all along was to split up Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker in four-ball, even before the duo were thumped 7 and 6 by Adam Scott and K.J. Choi in Thursday’s foursomes.
“We were going to do that on Tuesday and Wednesday,” Couples said of putting Woods with Dustin Johnson.
International team captain Greg Norman said he split up the Scott-Choi combo because he wanted Scott to help K T Kim with his lines off the tee in Friday’s winds, which are expected to blow from the north-northwest.
“K T has never played in a north-northwest win,” Norman said. “It’s going to be crucial for him getting direction.”
That reason is the same one that Norman used to keep Ernie Els and Ryo Ishikawa together, even though they lost 4 and 2 to Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson on Thursday.
Couples said he expects Jim Furyk and Phil Mickelson to “play a lot together.”
Friday's opening match features the same four players who played in Thursday’s opening match.
