ROBERT JENKINS WINS DRUMPELLIER CUP

Robert Jenkins of Crow Wood won the Drumpellier Cup today with an aggregate of 141 to pip Andy Fairbairn of Kirkhill by one shot.
Andy got a flier at the last and knocked it out of bounds to make six when par would have won him the tournament.
However Robert Jenkins, 44 years old,was a deserved winner after trying for 25 years to get his hands on the trophy. He is also the current Lanarkshire Order of Merit Champion.

ROBERT ROCK ENDS NINE-YEAR WAIT FOR EUROPEAN TOUR WIN

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Robert Rock ended his nine-year wait for a first European Tour title with a bold display to capture the BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi.
The 34 year old Englishman completed a wire-to-wire victory with a closing 67 that left him 21 under for the week, one ahead of Thorbjorn Olesen and Gary Boyd.
“I’m very surprised to finally win, but once I got started today I felt quite comfortable and I figured that this was as good a chance as I was ever going to have,” said Rock, after winning on The European Tour at the 209th attempt.
“I was surprised to see Thorbjorn Olesen shoot ten under so that got me thinking that I needed to make a few birdies to win but right now it feels great.
“I thought I would eventually do it. It’s taken longer than planned but it’s incredibly hard to win on this Tour. There are great players already out here and new ones arriving all the time like we saw today with Thorbjorn, so my best weeks have just not quite been good enough before. I’ve had good results but I’ve come up short. Finally, it’s all gone my way.”
But it was far from straightforward on a day when the Royal Park I Roveri course offered up plenty of birdie opportunities.
The 21 year old Dane Olesen certainly needed no second invitation – he had already completed a stunning front-nine 29 by the time Rock teed off, and eventually signed for a ten under 62 that set the clubhouse target at 20 under.
Rock, two clear overnight, seemed understandably nervous over the opening holes and bogeyed the third after failing to get up and down.
But he reeled off four consecutive birdies from the fifth, and gains at the tenth and 11th put him ahead of Olesen.
One of Rock’s three runner-up finishes came at this venue two years ago, and the possibility of him suffering the same fate increased with a bogey at the 12th.
Rock responded in style with a 15 footer for birdie at the 13th as Boyd was signing for a 66 with a four foot birdie at the last.
Needing to par his way in, Rock looked to be in big trouble when his drive at the 17th went way right into the trees.
However, he produced a fantastic escape onto the fairway, pitched to 12 feet and bravely holed his clutch putt for par.
“I was very lucky there,” he added. “My option was to chip out but I reckoned if I did that I would be struggling to make par and would have to make a birdie at the last to win.
“There was a gap and I like going for those when there is one available. I took a four iron but it caught the trees as it was going out and could very easily have gone in the water but didn’t so that made me feel it was probably going to be my day.”
Boyd was pleased with his improved showing, after a disappointing start to the season had seen him down at 162nd on The Race to Dubai at the start of the week.
“I saw Olesen was 19 under par when I had played nine holes and knew I could have a chance,” he said. “He birdied the last and I knew the target was 20. Rocky was making a few birdies and I played the last five holes really well under the microscope. Hit some loose tee shots but scrambled well.”
Earlier Challenge Tour graduate Olesen had birdied the first two, then saw his approach to the third bounce once into the cup for eagle.
Three further birdies followed before the turn, and although he bogeyed the 11th, he responded with a hat-trick of gains before another birdie at the last.
“It was amazing to start with two birdies and then holed my second shot for an eagle at the third,” he said.
“I think it’s the first time I’ve holed a full shot in a tournament so it felt magic. 23 putts today – I spoke to Thomas Björn after my third round and he gave me a little lesson, so thanks Thomas!
“My golf has been good last week and this week. I found something in my swing.”

Scotland’s Pete Whiteford, pictured right, claimed his third consecutive top-ten finish as he finished fourth on 19 under, one ahead of Dutchman Joost Luiten.
“Three top-tens are unlike me. Normally it’s two missed cuts, but the form’s there,” said Whiteford who earned 75,000 Euros.

“I was on Challenge Tour for five years – I think I had honorary membership – and also played the EuroPro Tour. I served my time and hopefully we don’t look back.
“They were great fun but this is where I want to be. My game’s come round the last month or two and I was looking for a high finish this week rather than getting money to keep my card. That’s done and dusted now and I can press on now.”
There were large galleries following the action once again in Turin, but local favourite Francesco Molinari and 18 year old sensation Matteo Manassero struggled to mount a serious challenge as they finished in a share of eighth place.

GREIG MARCHBANK WINS SGU JUNIOR TOUR EVENT AT CARDRONA

By ROSS DUNCAN SGU Media and Marketing Manager
Dumfries and County’s Greig Marchbank eased to an emphatic four-shot wire-to-wire victory in the SGU Junior Tour’s 72-hole event at Macdonald Cardrona near Peebles. The 16-year-old celebrated his call-up to the Scotland boys' team earlier in the week with an impressive performance on the former European Challenge Tour venue, finishing with a six-under par aggregate of 282, four clear of Liberton’s Anthony Blaney.
The South youngster opened with a two-under par 70 to share the first round lead with Jamie Savage (Cawder) and stretched clear of the pack with an excellent four-under par 68 to hold a five-shot lead going into the final two rounds today.
Marchbank, who reached the last eight of the Scottish Boys Championship at Dunbar, posted his third sub-par round of the weekend with a 69 however Blaney closed the gap to four with a fine 69. Going out in the final group, both players could only manage three-over par 75s as the rain closed in, leaving Marchbank to record his maiden Junior Tour win and further stretch his lead at the top of the SGU Boys Order of Merit standings.
Blaney, a member of the Lothians team who won last weekend’s Dunfermline Building Society Scottish Boys Area Team Championship, continued his fine form to clinch the runners-up spot on 286, two-under par while Mount Ellen’s Eamon Bradley fired a final round 69 – including an eagle two at the par four second - to finish in third place on 289.
Jordan Milne (Elgin), third in the second SGU Junior Tour event at Rowallan Castle last month, secured fourth spot at Cardrona with a four-under par 68 in the final round, which included a haul of six birdies, one clear of Barassie’s Euan Walker whose aggregate of 294 gave his fifth place.
Lee Morgan, also a member of the victorious Lothians boys' team, finished in style with a six-under par 66 – the best round of the weekend – for 295 and a share of sixth place alongside joint first round leader Jamie Savage, who faded with a final round 80.

ARCHER HITS BULL'SEYE TO WIN CHALLENGE TOUR'S ALLIANZ OPEN

From Challenge Tour Press Officer Paul Symes
England’s Phil Archer overcame playing partner Roland Steiner in a final day battle of attrition to lift his second Challenge Tour title at the Allianz Open Côtes d’Armor Bretagne.
Archer grabbed the lead of the €150,000 event with a 61 on the third day, but with howling winds and driving rain making for treacherous playing conditions at Golf Blue Green de Pléneuf Val Andre in Brittany, France, a repeat of that course record round was never likely on the final day.
Instead, Archer carded a round of 76 for a seven under par aggregate total and a one stroke win over Steiner, who also bogeyed the final hole to sign for a round of 75.
His winner’s cheque for €24,000 moved Archer to 13th in the Challenge Tour Rankings, and within sight of securing a swift return to The European Tour.
Archer, whose first victory came at the 2004 Rolex Trophy, said: “Today it was just a battle – the conditions were some of the toughest I’ve played in. It was difficult just to stand up straight in the wind sometimes, let alone try to hit a quality golf shot.
"It was hard to stay patient, and I almost lost it a couple of times on the back nine. But in the end I limped over the line, which was a huge relief. It’s obviously not how I dreamed it last night, but a win’s a win, and I’m absolutely delighted.
“My golf’s been in the doldrums for a couple of years now, but I feel like I’m getting back on track. This obviously gives my confidence a big lift but also means I can plan my schedule much better now, because before now I wasn’t guaranteed to get into every tournament with my category. And it also gives me a timely boost ahead of St Omer next week, which is a big tournament for us. So all in all, I’m a very happy man right now. I’ve been working so hard on my game lately, so it’s just great to get the rewards and I can really look forward to the rest of the season now.”
After narrowly missing out on his maiden Challenge Tour title, Steiner received the consolation of a cheque for €16,500 which moved the Austrian from 111th to 23rd in the Challenge Tour Rankings.
Third place was shared between Frenchman Adrien Bernadet and Sweden’s Martin Erlandsson, who signed for respective rounds of 73 and 70.
The only man to break par on the final day was England’s Jamie Moul, who carded a superb round of 68 to finish in a tie for eighth place on one under par.

ANDREW OLDCORN COMPLES PGA TITLE DOUBLE AFTER TEN YEARS

Andrew Oldcorn is No 1 at the end of the De Vere PGA Senior Championship at Slaley Hall.

By PAUL SYMES
European Senior Tour Press Officer
Edinburgh's Andrew Oldcorn cruised to his first European Senior Tour title with a closing round of 70 to win the De Vere Club PGA Seniors Championship by an astonishing nine strokes.
In so doing, Oldcorn became only the sixth man in history – after Ken Bousfield, Neil Coles, Brian Huggett, Dai Rees and Charlie Ward – to complete the PGA double, having won the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club ten years ago.
Oldcorn started the day with a five-stroke lead over his nearest challenger, Gordon Brand Junior, and promptly extended that advantage to six shots when his playing partner bogeyed the opening hole at De Vere Slaley Hall in Hexham, England.
Brand Junior rallied with three successive birdies from the second hole to close the gap, but Oldcorn immediately responded with a hat-trick of gains to regain the initiative, and when his compatriot followed a double bogey on the testing ninth with a bogey at the tenth, the back nine became a victory procession for the champion.
Oldcorn eventually signed for a round of 70 for an 11 under par winning aggregate total which earned the 51 year old €45,646 and moved him to second place behind American Tom Watson on the Senior Tour Order of Merit. The victory continued a superb season for Oldcorn, who has now finished in the top five in four of his six appearances so far this campaign.
His winning margin was the largest at this event since Seiji Ebihara won by ten strokes at De Vere Carden Park in 2002.
Oldcorn said: “I can’t tell you how much this means to me. I couldn’t have picked a better event for my first victory on the Senior Tour. It’s a very special day in my career, and the first time I’ve won a tournament since that day at Wentworth ten years ago, so I couldn’t be any happier. All the pressure was on me today, and Gordon started well as I knew he would. But I hit back well and then had a huge slice of luck on the ninth, where I could’ve lost my ball but it bounced back into play off the trees. But you need that sort of fortune to win any golf tournament.
“When I birdied the 15th hole and Gordon three-putted for bogey, I knew it was in the bag then. That gave me enough breathing space and even though I was disappointed to double bogey the last, I’d already done all the hard work. My first goal this year was to win, and now that I’ve done that I’ve got to set my sights a bit higher and think about winning the Order of Merit. Tom’s unlikely to play in five events and I’ve stolen a bit of a march on Sandy [Lyle] here, so I’ve just got to keep doing what I’ve been doing and hopefully I’ll get my rewards.”
Brand Jnr’s round of 74 left him nine shots adrift of the winner, but the Scot could take consolation from a cheque for €31,952.
He said: “I started off quite well and put a little bit of pressure on him, but then on the ninth I let Andrew off the hook by making a double bogey when he’d been in trouble, and there was no coming back from that. But credit to Andrew, because he’s played very well this week and deserved to win.”
The Australian duo of Mike Harwood and Peter Fowler finished in a tie for third place on level par after shooting respective rounds of 72 and 69.
