SCOTLAND BEAT IRELAND BUT ENGLAND STILL CHAMPIONS

FROM THE SGU WEBSITE
Scotland returned to form with a strong performance today against unbeaten Ireland in difficult conditions at the Home Internationals at County Sligo Golf Club. However England also won and took the overall title.
Scotland made a fast start to the morning foursomes and were always in front as the matches developed. As the weather progressively deteriorated to torrential rain and strong winds Scotland forged ahead with some stunning play to lead Ireland by 4 ½ to ½ at lunch.
The top pairing of Paul Shields (Kirkhill) and David Law (Hazlehead) won 3/2 against the previously unbeaten Irish pair of Cutler and Phelan. They were an excellent 2 under par when they closed the match out at the par 3, 16th hole.
Greg Paterson (St Andrews New) and Kris Nicol (Fraserburgh) scored even better and were an outstanding 4 under when they won their match 5/4. Ross Kellett (Colville Park) and Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) also won 3/2 playing good golf throughout their match.
James Byrne (Banchory) and Scott Gibson (Southerness) built a three hole lead but were back to all square at 14. However they promptly won 15 and 16 before a half at the 17th saw them close the match 2/1.
In the final match James White (Lundin Links) and Philip McLean (Peterhead) were all square through 9 holes despite being 4 under. They lost two holes to be 2 down at 14 and then rallied to win 15 and 17 to finish all square.
Needing a fast start the afternoon singles saw Scotland began well and going into the back nine Scotland were up in six and square in two matches. At the same time Wales were putting up a spirited fight against England and were looking like winning or halving their match and doing Scotland the favour it most likely needed in the overall standings.
It was not to be however as England won all four of their last matches over the last two holes to win their match overall by a flattering 9 ½ to 5 ½ margin. In the interim Scotland won 3 ½ points out of the first four possible through James Byrne (2/1), David Law (2/1), Michael Stewart (2/1) and Ross Kellet (all square). This secured the match for Scotland.
Thereafter Ireland showed why they were unbeaten coming into the final day to finish strongly and win the next five matches against Greg Paterson (3/2), Paul Shields (5/3), Graeme Robertson (2/1), Philip Mclean (2/1), and Kris Nicol (3/2). In the final match James White continued his success on 18 with a birdie to claim a well earned half. Scotland won overall 8 ½ to 6 ½.
Today’s results left England, Ireland and Scotland all tied on 2 points from two wins each. England retain the coveted Raymond Trophy based on winning the greater number of points overall.
Commenting on the final outcome, Scotland Captain Scott Knowles said: “We played well today and for a time it looked possible that we could come through to win. However we had left ourselves too much to do.”
