HUGH HUNTER'S CLACKMANNAN COUNTY NEWS

DISMAL DAY AT DOLLAR FOR COUNTY TEAM

With much of the play matching the weather conditions last Sunday, the County golf team lost to a Stirlingshire side over Dollar golf course. The wet conditions favoured target golf for approach shots and it was the Stirling golfers who took full advantage. Best County performances came from experienced team members John Maxwell who kept ahead to win at the last and John Gullen who fought back from a one hole deficit early on to halve his match. Tillicoultry’s Scott Hunter finished strongly coming from one behind at the 15th and winning his match with a birdie three at the last where he hit a wedge to 6 ft and holed the putt.

RESULTS (CLACKMANNAN NAMES FIRST)

1. Michael Robertson (Alva) lost to Ryan Campbell (Falkirk) 4/3
2. Allan Watson (Braehead) lost to Mark Cox (Falkirk) 3/2
3. John Maxwell (Tulliallan) beat Derek Fish (Glenbervie) 2 holes
4. Ian Guthrie (Alloa) lost to Ross Kane (Grangemouth) 4/3

Discussions are underway to try to reschedule this match earlier in the season to give the top players experience for the Scottish Area Team Championship.
TOP TEN FINISH FOR SCOTT IN LEVEN GOLD MEDAL

Continuing his return to golf form, Dollar’s Scott Borrowman produced scores reminiscent (for older golfers) of Ben Hogan’s win in the Open in 1953. Hogan produced the often quoted four decreasing rounds (73,71,70,69) to take the Open with a score of 283. In last weekend’s Leven Gold Medal Scott also scored 283 with rounds of 75,72,69,67, finishing in 5th place 5 shots behind the winner and giving him some Scottish Golf Union Order of Merit points. With four 72 hole events left in the Amateur season, Scott will be hoping for continuing good scores to move up the table.
His last round included a hole in one, his second in competitive play but his seventh in total

BELHAVEN HANDICAP GOLF EVENTS

Regional qualifying is still underway in the Scottish Golf Union Handicap events. Dollar ( Steven McPherson and Jim Livingstone) will be trying to qualify at Bathgate on the 12th August for the Scottish Club Handicap Championship while at Williamwood on the 16th August, Alloa ( Sheila Travers, Freda Nichols) will have the last chance of a Clackmannanshire Club to qualify for the finals of the Captains and Secretary’s Championship to be held at the Torrance course at the Fairmont hotel in St Andrews at the end of September.

SCANDINAVIAN GOLF FOR CALLUM

Tulliallan’s Callum Macaulay is in Norway this week for the Norwegian Challenge tour event being played near Oslo. He will be hoping to improve his 69th ranking place on the Challenge Tour to try to avoid competing in the gruelling Tour Qualifying School being held in September.
