Welshman Gareth Wright (West Linton) won the Shotts Young Pros 54-hole pro-am by five shots today, thanks to a five-under-par morning second round of 65 which included seven birdies and catapulted him seven shots clear of the field with 18 holes to go.
There were only six scores under the Shotts par of 70 over the two days of the tournament – and Wright, pictured, claimed two of them, having posted an opening round of 69 on Sunday.
Gareth, under no pressure, went off the boil with a final-round 73 for a total of three-under-207 but he was able to coast home and collect the £645 prize.
Wright won the Craigielaw Young Pros’ event in April and tied for first place in the Sprint Series event at The Carrick in July.
Runner-up on two-over 212 with scores of 67, 74 and 71 was Neil Fenwick (Dunbar) who had a couple of double bogeys in his second round. He earned £540.
Overnight leader Ewan Grimes (Carrick on Loch Lomond) subsided into third place on 213 with scores of 67, 76 and 70 for a £440 payday. Like Fenwick, Grimes had a couple of double bogeys in round two.
The only girl in the field of 49, Challenge Tour player Callum Macaulay’s wife Claire-Marie (Carlton was her maiden name), earned £220 by finishing a highly creditable joint sixth on 218 with three very steady scores of 72, 73 and 73.
