Royal and Ancient Golf Club Spring Medal Second Day Scores

By AUBYN STEWART-WILSON
Members' Secretary, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews
From the outset, conditions on the second day of the Spring Medal (over the Old Course), were sunny and calm, and noticeably warmer than on Monday. The parking-up of an elegant, red E-Type Jaguar in the Clubhouse car park at just after 6.30 am signalled the arrival of Father and Son, Iain and Douglas Bett, who were among the early starters.
Later in the morning at 9.30 am Alan Muir, a regular competitor at both the Spring and Autumn Meetings, teed off at the impressive age of 90. 1st Tee Starter by this stage of the morning was 91 year old local Member Andy Wright, resulting in an aggregate Starter/Competitor age of 181!
Alan Muir has a long and colourful golfing CV, among which is his claim to have hit the longest drive in the world, when at the age of 16 his tee shot on the first at Monifieth landed in a coal truck heading for Aberdeen.
In today’s Medal he struck just four shots more than his age, returning a net 78 (94-16).
Tim Myles (Luffness New) returned the best net score of the day 69 (79-10), equalling the best net score returned on Monday, but with the better score over the last nine holes. The lowest gross score of the day was 77 returned by both Simon Kilcoyne (Portmarnock) and Brian Morrison (Prestwick).
The CSS on Tuesday was 74.
The Brazil Nut Cup nine-hole Stableford competition for Members 70 years of age and over, was also played on Tuesday, over the Strathtyrum Course. A total of 43 Members took part, with Alan Elliott acting as the Honorary Starter. The competition was won by John Stevens (Royal Worlington and Newmarket) with a total of 22 Stableford points, and after count-back over the last 6 holes against Kenneth Smith (The New Golf Club) and Donal McAleese (Portmarnock).
Kenneth Smith, for the second year in succession, won the Methuselah Trophy for competitors 80 years of age and over, also after count-back against Donal McAleese.
The leading Brazil Nut Cup scores returned were:
22 Points – J G Stevens, K D Smith, D S McAleese
21 Points – J R F Adams
20 Points – K A DeGhetto, N M Sharp
19 Points – I Edward, J Gray
