Warren upbeat after closing 66 in Kenya


MARC Warren delivered an upbeat assessment on the state of his game after closing with a round of 66 to finish in a tie for sixth place at the Barclays Kenya Open on the Challenge Tour.
Warren, who won the Rankings in 2005, was unable to add his tally of two Challenge Tour titles at the €190,000 event, his eight under par aggregate total falling six shots short of Michiel Bothma’s winning mark.
But after sprinkling six birdies in his closing round at Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi, Kenya, the 30 year old radiated confidence as he sets about trying to earn his European Tour card back.
Warren said: “I’ve really felt great about my game this week, I’ve just struggled a little bit on the greens. Today was very close to being a great round of golf – I was disappointed that I missed the green at the last hole, because it probably would’ve been the first time I’ve ever hit all 18 greens. I only missed two greens yesterday, so from tee to green I couldn’t be any happier with the way I’m striking the ball. My control and flight’s been spot on – all that’s been missing is a few more putts.
“The swing changes I started working on last year are really starting to have the desired effect now. On Friday I was a little bit off, but still managed to shoot 74, whereas last year that might’ve been high 70s and I would’ve been out of the tournament. So the technique’s probably the best it’s ever been, and it gives me a lot of confidence for the rest of the season. It’s just a shame there isn’t an event on the Challenge Tour for a few weeks, because the way I’m striking the ball at the minute, I just want to keep playing. So that’s a little bit frustrating, but hopefully I can get an invite to one or two of the European Tour events in Asia after the Masters.”
