BRIAN SOUTAR IS LOCAL HERO AT CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS

FROM THE SGU WEBSITE
Local hero Brian Soutar produced two outstanding closing rounds to win the season-opening Scottish Champion of Champions at Leven.

Six shots off the pace at the halfway stage, the 26-year-old Leven Golfing Society man signed off with scores of 68 and 67 to finish four shots clear of the elite field with a five-under-par total of 279.

It was the second time the Leven man had been the toast of the Fife town, having also won the Standard Life Gold Medal over the same course in 2007.

"I'm delighted to win the first tournament of the year," said Soutar, a member of the SGU elite squad. "To play so well in tough conditions is great.

"I feel under a bit added pressure here because people expect me to perform and I'm delighted to have completed the Leven double after also winning the Gold Medal."

The Fifer made his move in the third round, an eagle and three birdies in a three-under-par effort taking him to the top of the leaderboard.

By contrast, Sunday's morning round was the one that cost Jordan Findlay his chance of getting the domestic season off to a winning start.

It all seemed to be going so well for the former British Boys' champion when he picked up two birdies in the first three holes to extend his half-way lead.

But two-double bogeys and four bogeys thereafter cost him a five-over-par 76, seeing the six-shot cushion he'd held over Soutar at the start of the day turn into a two-shot deficit.

Soutar's presence at the top of the leaderboard brought out a few more locals for the final round, with spice being added by the fact the leader had a Lundin man - James White - as his nearest challenger.

Sam Binning, two shots back alongside Findlay, also looked to still be in the hunt, but Soutar showed he meant business by starting with two straight birdies.

That put him in the driving seat and, though both Findlay and Wigtownshire County's Kyle McClung stuck to their task in trying to chase him down, they always appeared to be fighting a losing hhttp://www.golfbox.dk/livescoring/finalresult.asp?tour={7B579AA0-32F7-4121-9C4C-9EB63F0223C5}&grp=1&clubOnly=1&color=1&lang=2057battle.

Though Soutar believed he'd been three in front playing the 16th, a six-foot par-saving putt there actually kept him two ahead before he sealed the title in style with a monster birdie putt at the last.

McClung closed with an excellent 68 to finish second on 283, making him the only other player in the field to finish under par.

Findlay's closing 70 put him third on 284, five shots in front of fourth-placed White (76).
