OLIVER GOSS (16) WINS HANDA AUSTRALIA CUP AT STEAMY PERTH

Royal Freemantle Golf Club junior Oliver Goss, 16, entering the final day one shot behind Laura Davies and tied with Stephanie Na, showed great skill and composure to catch and over take the former women’s world No 1 to claim the 2011 ISPS Handa Australia Cup with a final round 71 and two day total of 7 under par at steamy hot Perth, West Australia.
Davies, Na and Goss hit off in front of a large crowd as temperatures again soared to the high 30’s. The gallery swelled during the day as local golf fans revelled in the opportunity to watch the talented Goss battle head to head with Davies and Na.
Goss drew level with Davies entering the final nine and then surged ahead with a birdie on the 11th where the overnight leader made an uncharacteristic bogey.
Na had fallen off the pace early yet recovered to pass Davies and put pressure on Goss for the overall title. As the heat and pressure built, Na would make a last stumble, taking triple bogey 7 on the 35th hole and double-bogey at the last.
Davies claimed the ladies' title on 2 under par despite struggling with her game for most of the day. Her final hole bogey proved costly relinquishing the lead for the overall professional prize money title to Rodger Davis.
Davis shot 69 to also claim the men’s title, just pipping Craig Mann after a four-way tussle that also saw Lyndsay Stephan and Mike Harwood challenge the lead.
The warm conditions took their toll, particularly on some of the senior players, as Perth, Western Australia endured another hot steamy day with the usual sea breeze making only a fleeting appearance.
The round of the day came from Kristie Smith, recent winner of the New Zealand Open, shooting a 5 under 67 to vault into a tie for third with Stephanie Na. Smith also took great pleasure in winning the family challenge against father Wayne who makes his senior tour debut in China in two weeks.
In claiming the 2011 Handa Australia Cup title Goss is the second amateur to win the event following Luke Humphries in 2009. The other have been Garry Merrick (2006), Peter Senior (07) and Jan Stephenson (08).
At the presentation Goss thanked Vault Sports management and Dr Handa form ISPS for giving him the opportunity to play in the invite only field.
The tournament, in its fifth year at Nedlands Golf Club, is the brainchild of Dr Haruhisa Handa, Chairman of the International Sports Promotion Society. In what is know as ‘the joining of the generations’ Australia’s up and coming juniors play alongside and learn from some of the greats of the game.
