RYDER CUP WALES SENIOR OPEN REPORT, SCORES

Bob Cameron makes England smile again

By SCOTT CROCKETT
Chief Press Officer, European Tour
Bob Cameron tried to put a smile back on the face of English sport at Royal Porthcawl when he led the way after the second round of The Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open on the European Senior Tour.
After the Three Lions’ dismal showing in the World Cup against Algeria, the flag of St George hung limp but Cameron put some starch back in the fabric with a fine 66 on the classic Welsh links for a nine under par total of 135 and a one shot lead over the Scottish duo of Gordon Brand Jnr and Ross Drummond.
“If our football team had performed last night how I putted today then I think we would have won about 10-0,” said the 57 year old whose two Senior Tour titles to date – the Open de France Seniors and the Sanremo Masters – both came in the 2004 season.
“I think most people watch England play, certainly at the World Cup, and it was just disappointing that we didn’t put at least one in like I did on the greens. I putted extremely well and I think I only had 26 putts altogether. So any time you are that low in putting stats, you are going to score well.”
The round also went some way to making up for the painful memories Cameron has of this event last year where he led after a fine opening 69 only to slump to a horrendous 80 in the second round before eventually finishing tied 19th.
“The weather is a little kinder this year than it was last year and the wind is not as strong as it was 12 months ago,” he said. “The course is also playing a little bit quicker than it did then which I think suits me and suits my game.
“But I have to say that this is a wonderful course and a wonderful lay-out. It is definitely one of United Kingdom’s best links courses – it is certainly Wales’ best links course.”
After a first-day 69 for the second year in succession, Cameron knew he needed a fast start to avoid the similar travails he endured 12 months ago and got it with birdies at the first two holes and an eagle three at the fourth. Although he dropped shots at both par fives on the inward half, he made amends with birdies at the eighth, 11th, 14th and 15th.
In joint second place going into the final round are two men who might share a nationality but who got to the same eight under par total of 136 by vastly differing routes.
Ross Drummond continued to tap into a rich vein of form which saw him finish second to Frenchman Marc Farry last week in the Handa Irish Seniors Open when he matched Cameron’s 66.
The purple patch came for the 53 year old Scot around the turn with three birdies in a row from the seventh to follow an eagle three at the fifth, while his back nine was a more sedate level par 36 with only one bogey and one birdie.
“I had a decent chance to win in Ireland and this, thankfully, is carrying on that form,” he said. “But I think the key is that I am just enjoying my golf just now and when you do that, I think it often shows in your performance.
“I am in there again with a chance to go one better than last week and that is all you can do at this game. If you can get into the last couple of groups on a Sunday afternoon, and get off to a good start, then you never know.”
While Drummond was precise, his fellow Scot Brand Jnr was wonderfully erratic again, especially on the front nine of the Porthcawl course. In total the 51 year old has now played 18 holes on the front nine during the first two rounds and, incredibly, has only made one par figure – at the seventh on Friday.
Saturday’s second round featured a disastrous start with a double bogey six at the first and bogeys at the third and fourth interrupted by a birdie at the second. But after that, it was all glory with five birdies in a row from the fifth to the ninth, before he threw in another at the tenth for good measure on his way to a 69.
“After four holes I was really almost out of the tournament,” said the man who won the Matrix Jersey Classic on the Senior Tour two weeks ago. “I knew then I had to knuckle down, be patient and not do anything different and try and get the shots back. I knew there were par fives coming, even though you had to hit good shots to make birdies. I did that and now I’m right back in it for tomorrow.”
Three players, South Africans John Bland and Chris Williams alongside Ireland’s Eamonn Darcy share fourth place on seven under par 137 going into the final round but the large crowds’ hopes of a home winner in Welsh legend Ian Woosnam look forlorn as the 1991 Masters Champion’s second round 72 leaves him on three over par 147 in a share of 40th place.

ROBERT ARNOTT WINS IN BALTIC

CONDITIONS AT PORTLETHEN

It’s not often that a par round wins a Tartan Tour pro-am in the third week of June – but that’s what happened at Portlethen Golf Club today.
In Baltic conditions with a bitterly cold wind – the temperature was as low as eight degrees by the finish – Robert Arnott’s 72 won him the top individual prize of £1,084 by a shot from James McGhee (Turnhouse) and PGA Cup player Craig Matheson (Falkirk Tryst) who each earned £758.
Underlining the wintry conditions, there were three No Returns by professionals.
Arnott, pictured, a former PGA Cup team man, had a double bogey 6 at the first and also dropped shots at the eighth and 17th but he cancelled the mistakes out with birdies at the third, fourth, 10th and 18th in halves of 37 and 35.
Two teams returned net scores of 11 under par 61 in the pro-am section. Winners on the better inward half were the Flotec amateur trio of Andrew Florence (handicap 6), Stuart Florence (9) and Rory Campbell (18). Their pro was Craig Gordon (Edinburgh Golf Centre).
They pipped the Rigmar team of Gary Chalmers (12), Ken Mack (13) and Charles Macgregor (15) spearheded by Turnberry Hotel pro Ross Leeds.

Arruti bids to end 13 years since last Challenge Tour win

From Challenge Tour Press Officer Paul Symes
Spaniard Jesus Maria Arruti will carry a three-shot lead into the final round of the Moroccan Golf Classic, where he will bid to capture his third Challenge Tour 13 years after his last victory.
A flawless round of 69 saw Arruti, a veteran of no fewer than 20 visits to The European Tour Qualifying School, move to 12 under par, with American Christopher Baker his nearest challenger on nine under after a level par round of 72.
Arruti’s last victory came at the 1997 Modena Classic Open, but after dropping just two shots over the three days at Pullman Mazagan Royal Golf and Spa in El Jadida, Morocco, the Spaniard is confident of ending the 13-year drought.
He said: “My last win in Italy was a long time ago, but I can still remember it well! I hadn’t expected to wait so long for my next one, but hopefully I can finish the job tomorrow. I’m playing very well – I think I only missed two greens today. So if I can keep up this level of consistency tomorrow, then I’ll have a great chance.”
The man hoping to deny Arruti his long-awaited victory is Baker, who started the week with an advantage over most of the field having already played the course in April, when the event was due to be staged until the volcanic ash cloud intervened.
Baker, one of 11 Americans in the field, was disappointed with his round of 72 – an eagle three at the 11th hole notwithstanding – and knows he will have to raise his game if he is to overhaul Arruti.
He said: “I didn’t play as well as I can today – having made a bunch of birdies on the first two days, I didn’t make one today. But I’m still in the hunt, so hopefully I can have a better day tomorrow and put some pressure on Jesus. He’s playing very well though, so I’ll have to go low to win.”
Third place is shared by Dutchman Richard Kind and Italian Stefano Reale, who sit on eight under par after respective rounds of 72 and 70.
The lowest score of the day was posted by Northern Ireland’s Jonathan Caldwell, who moved to six under par courtesy of a round of 64. The Ulsterman shares fifth place with American Nico Bollini, Argentine Pablo Del Grosso, Denmark’s Thomas Norret and Italian Andrea Perrino.

Ross Kellett leads by three in Tennant Cup
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Motherwell’s Ross Kellett  badly needs a victory in a 72-hole Scottish Golf Union Order of Merit event to stay in the top 100 of  the RandA World Amateur Rankings or to boost his morale if nothing else … and he is well on his way to achieving it in this weekend’s Tennant Cup.
The Colville Park player, who has missed a few cuts of late, posted a three-under-par halfway total of 139 after rounds of 71 and 68 over the Glasgow Golf Club’s Gailes links course in Ayrshire. Now he must dig in at the top over Sunday’s final two rounds at the parkland Killermont course in Glasgow.
Kellett leads by three from former Scottish boys champion James White (Stirling University and Lundin) who finished fifth in the world universities championships in South Africa a week or so ago. White had rounds of 70 and 72 for 142 at Glasgow Gailes.
In joint third place are Michael Stewart, the former Scottish boys match-play champion from Troon Welbeck, and Greg Nicolson (Mortonhall).
Stewart, who says he is not returning to East Tennessee State University after two years on the US college golf circuit, had rounds of 70 and 74. Nicolson scored 71 and 73.
Steven McEwan (Caprington), runner-up, albeit seven shots behind runaway winner James Byrne in this event 12 months ago, must like the Tennant Cup ambience. Once again he has stepped up his game for the Glasgow Golf Club's prestigious 72-holer and is lying joint fifth on 145 after rounds of 74 and 71. Also on 145 are Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm) and Fraser McKenna (Balmore) who was the first-round leader with a two-under-par 69.

Banchory student ends glorious week at Muirfield with the Silver Medal

Byrne has no answer to Jeong's superb display of putting

FROM THE RandA WEBSITE
South Korea’s Jin Jeong is the 2010 Amateur Champion. He becomes the first Asian winner of the event in its 125-year history after defeating James Byrne of Scotland 5 and 4 in today’s 36-hole final at Muirfield, East Lothian.
Jeong, 20, produced a superb display of putting to take the title with at birdie at the 32nd hole, his tenth of the day. The reigning Riversdale Cup (Australia) champion reached the halfway stage two holes ahead of Byrne, the 21-year-old from Banchory having let an early two-hole advantage of his own slip away.
For the first four holes of the afternoon round, the scores remained the same, before Jeong made the telling move. He holed birdie putts of 30 feet, 12 feet and 18 feet on the par-five fifth, par-four sixth and par-three seventh respectively to build a five-hole lead that would prove insurmountable.
“I’ve never putted better than that,” said Jeong. “I was quite nervous all week, especially before today. But I came here this week really wanting to win. I wanted this title so badly.”
Courtesy of his victory, the current world number 10, who plays his golf in Australia representing Waverley Golf Club, earns an exemption into the 150th Anniversary Open Championship and an invitation to the 2011 Masters Tournament.
“I hoped that I was going to win the Amateur and come back for The Open because I’ve been watching The Open on TV every year since Ernie Els won at Muirfield in 2002. That was the first time I’d ever watched it,” he said. “I really wanted to know what it was like to play out of knee-high rough!”
“I always hoped that my first Major would be The Open. Now I can play at St Andrews. It means everything. It’s a dream come true.”
Jeong becomes the second Korean amateur to earn a place at St Andrews, the other being Eric Chun, who secured his Open berth at International Final Qualifying – Asia earlier in the year.
James Byrne, meanwhile, narrowly missed out on becoming the first Scot to win the Amateur Championship on home soil since Stuart Wilson, who won at St Andrews in 2004. The world number 20 was denied the chance of finding the form he had shown in previous rounds.
“I made a steady start,” said the Arizona State University student. “He made a couple of bogeys and I got two up.
“The conditions were much tougher today. Not only was it windy, but there were a lot of cross winds, and he [Jeong] seemed to handle it well - really good ball control. I was struggling with that.
“I don’t know how he putted so well. Every putt he hit was just perfect speed - it was unbelievable. He never really gave me a chance.”
“But I’ve got two more chances to secure my Open debut this year: Local Final Qualifying at Kingbarns for the 2010 Open, and the European Amateur for 2011, so I am looking forward to that,”  added Byrne.
The 2011 Amateur Championship will be held at Hillside and Hesketh golf clubs from June 13 to 18.
Result of final (36 holes)
Jin Jeong (South Korea) beat James Byrne (Banchory, Scotland) 5 and 4.

John Daly three shots off the pace in Fort Smith Classic

John Daly shot a 2-under 68 and finished three strokes off the lead after the second round of the Nationwide Tour’s Fort Smith Classic in Arkansas/
Daly finished the day tied for fifth at 6 under at the 6,783-yard Hardscrabble Country Club course. First-round leader Nathan Smith (70) is again atop the leaderboard at 9 under after two rounds. Zack Miller (66) is one stroke behind.
This is Daly’s first Nationwide event since 1991. He is from Dardanelle, about 75 miles from Fort Smith, and organizers hope he can help this struggling tournament find a title sponsor so it can remain viable for the future.
“I was five shots out to begin the day and the lead didn’t move, so now I’m three shots back,” Daly said. “Any time you can pick up a couple here and there on Friday, it makes you feel good. It’s anybody’s ballgame.”
The two-time major champion birdied Nos. 1, 6 and 11. He also saved par several times, including on the par-4 18th after his tee shot went far to the right and bounced off the cart path, and his second shot went over the green and between the grandstands. Daly bounced back with a nice chip on his third shot and made a 15-foot putt for par. Daly made par on each of the final seven holes.
“I’m putting real well,” Daly said. “I’m hitting my lines. If you’re hitting your lines and not making them it’s just the rub of the green. I made a few key putts for par today and I left a lot on the table, but I really like the way I’m stroking the ball.”
Miller birdied three holes on the back nine to tie Smith for the lead before bogeying his final hole.

Graeme McDowell leads at halfway as Mickelson (66) charges

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell shot a second-round 68 to lead the 110th US Open at the halfway stage in California as Masters champion Phil Mickelson stormed into contention.
The recently crowned Celtic Manor Wales Open champion from Portrush carded six birdies and three bogeys at Pebble Beach Golf Links on Friday to reach three under par after 36 holes and give himself a two-stroke lead over fellow early starters Ernie Els, Ryo Ishikawa and Dustin Johnson.
Five-time US Open runner-up Mickelson vaulted from four over par to one under after a thrilling round of 66. England's Paul Casey and fellow overnight co-leader Brendon De Jonge of Zimbabwe are a further shot behind on level par after 73s, alongside American Jerry Kelly (70) and Alex Cejka (72) of Germany.
McDowell, 30, had started at level par but reached the turn at two under thanks to an eventful four-birdie, two-bogey opening nine holes from the 10th tee. He added more birdies at the par-four fourth and par-five sixth before closing with a three-putt bogey at the par-four ninth hole.
Two shots behind the Northern Irishman in the clubhouse were Americans Mickelson and Johnson, Japanese teenager Ishikawa and South African Els, who also shot a 68 to outscore marquee playing partners Lee Westwood and Tiger Woods by three and four shots respectively. World number one Woods finished at four over.
Johnson carded a 70 while Ishikawa, 18, shot a level-par 71 but the round of the day belonged to Mickelson, whose 66 featured five birdies in his first eight holes before adding a bogey and a birdie on his inward nine, having gone birdie-free in a first round plagued by putting troubles.
First round co-leader Casey recovered from a triple-bogey on his outward nine, at the par-five 14th, to card a 73 that kept him two strokes behind McDowell on level par.
There were mixed fortunes for Casey's fellow Englishmen in the world's top 10 - number three Westwood, number six Luke Donald and eighth-ranked Ian Poulter.
Poulter dropped two strokes to finish at one over following a 73, Westwood (71) reached halfway at three over alongside compatriot Ross McGowan (73) and Donald slipped to four over after a 75, level with Ireland's Padraig Harrington (73).
Northern Ireland's world No.10 Rory McIlroy missed the cut following a 77 that left him at 10 over, three shots the wrong side of the cut line. Rhys Davies of Wales did made it to the weekend on his US Open debut, his 70 leaving him at six over, while Northern Ireland's Gareth Maybin eagled the last for a 75 to sneak in at seven over.
