European senior amateurs' championships

BRONZE FOR SCOTS MEN; GOLD FOR SCOTS WOMEN

Scotland won the bronze medals in the European senior men's amateur team golf championship at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lancashire today
They beat Spain 3-2 in the play-off for third place.
The gold medals and the European title were won by defending champions England who beat the No 1 seeds, Ireland, 4 1/2-1/2 in the final.
Switzerland went into a 1-0 lead when Enrique Fontecilla and Juan Carolos beat Ian Taylor (Royal Burgess) and Colin Christy (Kilmacolm) by one hole in a tight foursomes match. The sides had been all square at the turn.
Scotland then took the next three games for a winning lead.
Tony Stafford (Dun Ochil) beat Juan Ortin by 4 and 2 after leading by one hole and the turn and by two after 12.
Former Walker Cup man Scott MacDonald found his true form on the final day. He beat Angel Macias by 3 and 2 after leading by one-hole at the turn and by two holes after 15.
David Gardner (Broomieknowe) clinched a Scotland victory when he won by 3 and 2 over Gustava Larrazabal after being four holes up at the turn.
With the overall match won, Jim Watt (Edzell) lost the final singles by 3 and 2 to Francisco Maestro who had been one up at the turn and two up after 12.
In the final, the front-running Irish, No 1 qualifiers by a comfortable margin and fairly easy winners of their matches leading up to the final, lost their momentum and form just when they needed it most.
Doug Arnold and former world speedway champion Dave Jessup took the fouromes tie by 3 and 2 over Tom Cleary and Michael Quirke.
Then Alan Squires, all square at the turn but two up after 12, won by 2 and 1 over Maurice Kelly.
Andrew Carman clinched an England victory by delivering the third point. He survived a sticky start - two down after three to the experienced Arthur Piersse - to be all square at the turn on his way to a 3 and 2 win.
Chris Reynolds, three up after six holes, bon wy 3 and 2 against Adrian Morrow.
Former Walker Cup player and captain Garth McGimpsey halved the remaining singles against Philip Slatere who was two up after three and two up at the turn.

Maurice Kelly lost to Alan Squaires 2 and 1.
Arthur Pierse lost to andrew Carman 3 and 2.
Adrian Morrow lost to Chris Reynolds 3 and 2.
Garth McGimpsey halved with Philip Slater.
