Hugh Hunter's Clackmannan County News

WEE COUNTY WOE AT THE SCOTTISH AMATEUR

In the Scottish Amateur Golf Championship played over Gullane No 1 course last week, the four local golfers lost in the early rounds.
First-round casualties were Alloa’s Scott Moffat losing at the 19th and Dollar’s Darren Hulston at the 23rd, both regretting that a winning position slipped away.
Scott Borrowman had an easy first round win but failed to take chances against James Byrne, the No 1 seed in the second round, eventually losing by 2 and 1.
Best Clackmannan performance came from Alloa’s Jamie Aitken who started with a fine win against Peter Latimer (St Andrews New Club) by 4 and 2. Jamie’s sub-par performance was more than enough to win against the fourth placed Scottish Order of Merit golfer.
Jamie continued the good work in round 2 against Malcolm Campbell, winning 2 and 1, but in round 3 he slipped to a 4 hole deficit on the outward nine against John Duff (Newmachar) which proved too much to overcome and he lost on the 16th green by 3 and 2.

MORE TEE-OFFS FOR CLACKMANNAN OLFERS

Once again Clackmannan golfers are trying their luck in National events. Alva’s Lawrence Allan and Alloa’s John Salmond are in the field for the prestigious British Boys Championship, to be held at Kilmarnock Barassie. Over 200 competitors, drawn from all over the world, will play 36 holes stroke play over Kilmarnock Barassie and nearby Dundonald links on August 10th and 11, with the top 64 scores qualifying for match play.
In the same week, Tulliallan’s Bob Stewart will make the long trip to Walton Heath to compete in the Seniors Open amateur Championship. A field of 144 includes nine from Scotland and 34 from the USA .
Dollar golfers Scott Borrowman and Darren Hulston are in the field for the 72 hole Leven Gold Medal this weekend.

GRANT DOWIE ORDER OF MERIT
Clackmannan County Golf Union’s Boys Order of merit for the Grant Dowie trophy is in its final stages and will be decided on the results of the Alva Boys Open on August 7. Leading the field is Tillicoultry’s Kevin Ross with 270 points followed by John Salmond (Alloa) on 235 points then Lawrence Allan (Alva) 200 points. County Junior Convenor Sam Kinnaird explained “ It’s a pity some Boys Opens have been cancelled but there are still 17 boys in the list, and hopefully they will be inspired to improve their golf games”
