Edward Trophy victory for Peterhead player

Paul Lawrie 'absolutely chuffed' to
-
hear about Philip McLean victory

Paul Lawrie gets almost as big a kick out of watching the progress of his Foundation proteges as he does playing well himself! So the 1999 Open championship was "absolutely chuffed when Philip McLean texted me to say he had won the Edward Trophy" over 72 holes at Glasgow Gailes on Saturday-Sunday.
"I have been working with Phillip for some time and he has been improving steadily. Hopefully this win will give him great confidence," added Paul.
Peterhead member McLean, winner of the Leven Gold Medal last autumn, was therefore chalking up his second 72-hole SGU Order of Merit tournament victory when he won the prestigious Edward Trophy on Sunday.
The 23-year-old had rounds of 68, 72, 69 and 73 for a six-under-par total of 282 to win by a single stroke from Brian Soutar (Leven Golfing Society). Soutar had scores of 73, 70, 70 and 72.
McLean led from start to finish.
Ross Kellett (Colville Park), the top home-based Scot in the R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings, finished joint third with local member and former international Jonathan King on 285. Kellett had scores of 71, 74, 72 and 68 while King had rounds of 72, 70, 73 and 70. McLean, who is targeting the European Tour School at the end of the season, said:
"I think I won it with my driving. There's so much heather here you have to hit the fairways from the tee to have a chance of scoring and I was able to do that and lead from start to finish.
"My coach Neil Marr and I have been working on keeping my rhythm and I was happy with the way that went."
