Ricky Barnes squanders six-stroke

lead before end of third round

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Ricky Barnes further staked his claim to a US Open victory as the third
round came to its conclusion, but it could have been so much better for
the American at Bethpage Black.
As the second major of the year headed for a first 72-hole Monday
finish since 1983, Barnes had threatened to set more records after
shooting the lowest 36-hole total in US Open history, a 132, on
Saturday.
The American, playing his first full year on the US PGA Tour in his
seventh year as a professional, was going the right way about emulating
2003 Open champion Ben Curtis in making his maiden professional victory
at a major.
Barnes, starting the day at eight under with a one-shot lead over
fellow American Lucas Glover, moved into a three-shot lead after six
holes thanks to a birdie at the second and a long-range eagle putt at
the fourth.

The eagle got the 28-year-old to 11 under par, the first man to move
into double digits at the US Open since Jim Furyk in the third round at
Olympia Fields en route to his victory in 2003.
Despite a bogey at the seventh, Barnes' lead stretched to six shots at
the eighth as both Glover and Mike Weir in third place, slipped to four
under.
Yet Barnes unravelled a little after turning for home, bogeying the
long and difficult par-4s at 10 and 12 as Glover birdied the 10th and
11th.
Barnes rebounded with a birdie at 13th but his three-shot lead over the
field at nine under after 14 holes gave his rivals some hope they could
reel him in over the final round, which was set to start late on
Sunday.
Weir was at two under playing the 16th in a tie for third with David
Duval, who birdied the 16th to also join Hunter Mahan, with a 68 and
world number two Phil Mickelson, who delighted his big following of
fans by sinking a 38-foot birdie putt at the 18th for a 69.
England's Ross Fisher had got to three under after four holes but he
stayed in touch with the leaders at two under playing the last.

A fistful of dollars for Russell

Knox in Oklahoma

Florida-based Russell Knox from Inverness earned $4,355 for a joint ninth place finish in the weekend NGA Hooters Tour event, the Buffalo Run Classic at Peoria Ridge Golf Club, Miami in Oklahoma.
Knox shot 23 birdies over 72 holes in compiling a total of 13-under-par 275 with rounds of 68, 70, 69 and 68 over the par-72, 6,960yd course.
He finished 11 shots behind the winner of the $33,566 prize, Ted Potter from Florida, who beat Martin Flores from Texas at the fourth hole of a play-off after they had tied on 20 under par 268. Flores' consolation prize was $16,607.
Englishman David Skinns from Lincoln collected $11,013 for third place on 269 after a tournament low final round of 62.
Knox has now won $25,477 in five appearances on the Hooters' Tour this season. He missed the cut in one but has had three top-10 and one top-12 finish in the others.

GOLF DATA LAB SPONSORED TOURNAMENT

Carnoustie's Cappi is new Scottish

youths champion at Renfrew

Carnoustie left-handed Angus Cappi was the surprise winner, by his own admission, of the Golf Data Lab Scottish youths open amateur stroke-play golf championship at
Renfrew Golf Club today.
Little known outside his native Angus prior to this 72-hole
breakthrough victory, the 19-year-old Cappi, whose coach is Kirriemuir's Karyn Dallas, held on grimly to the lead he had established over the first two rounds to win by one stroke.
Cappi, pictured with the trophy and medal by courtesy of the Scottish Golf Union, left Loretto School, Musselburgh last year and has been a full-time amateur golfer as he prepares to take up a golf scholarship with an American college in the autumn.
"My front nine in the third round was pretty poor but I finished strongly to recover and was only one over par at lunchtime – my only round when I didn't finish level or under, so that enabled me to hang on to my lead.
"I was a bit nervous heading into this afternoon's round but I knew if I could keep it steady I would be fine. Crichton was my nearest rival as the afternoon progressed and he really kept the pressure on, but my birdie at the 17th was a crucial moment for me. It eased things a bit
for me going down the last and even though I bogeyed the 18th I knew I had the title in the bag."
Cappi's three birdies in his final round helped to cancel out a bogey at the seventh plus an earlier slip at the second, which he felt was his biggest mistake of the day.
"I was in the middle of the fairway and I hooked my four-iron shot into the trees for a silly bogey, but apart from that I was pretty pleased with my game.
"To be honest I came to Renfrew not really expecting to win and I wasn't all that confident even after leading at halfway because I've never been in contention for a title. In some way, I probably wasn't under as much pressure as some of the bigger names who were expected to
win because everything was a bonus for me.
"It hasn't really sunk in yet, but it is a brilliant result for me."
Day one leader Delgaty Bay's Scott Crichton from Aberdour Golf Club was forced to settle for the second plac after he finished one-over-par for the tournament on 289. The disappointed 21-year old birdied the last on the testing parkland course but knew it was not enough to win the title.
Crichton, a star golfing student at the University of Western New Mexico, said, "I didn't drive the ball as."
Scotland could be proud of a 1-2 and shared third-place finish with William Bremner, Scottish boys' match-play championship runner up in 2007 tieing for third along with English players Scott Brace from Colchester and West Byfleet's Tom Hayes. The trio finished three over
for the tournament with a four round aggregate of 291.
McDonald Ellon's Adam Dunton was bang in the title picture until he took an 8 at the par 4 fourth. That put him out of the running for the title, dropping him back from second place in the third round to a final placing of sixth on 292 alongside Andrew Campell, and Germany's
Maximilian Walz from Germany – leader of the overseas contingent.

Tennant Cup triumph for Banchory player

James Byrne equals Killermont record

twice as he wins by SEVEN strokes

Banchory's James Byrne, not included in Scotland's squad for the upcoming European team championship, finished many shots ahead of them all with a devastating display to win the Tennant Cup 72-hole tournament by SEVEN shots at Glasgow Golf Club's Killermont course at Bearsden today.
After Saturday's first two rounds at Glasgow Gailes, 20-year-old Byrne, one of only two Scots to reach the last 16 of last week's British amateur championship at Formby, led by one stroke with rounds of 73 and 68 for one-under-par 141.
But in perfect, windless scoring conditions at Killermont today, the Arizona State student simply destroyed the opposition by not once but TWICE equalling the course record of seven-under-par 63, held jointly by Glasgow Golf Club member and former Scotland cap Jonathan King and Cliff Barrowman.
Australian Bryden MacPherson also equalled the record in his morning
third-round.
But the spotlight was on Byrne who came into this prestigious event seeking
to add to his two previous SGU 72-hole Order of Merit tournament
victories – the Newlands Cup at Lanark a couple of years ago and the
North-east District Open at Newburgh on Ythan last year.
Byrne's four-round total of 15-under-par 267 was the joint second lowest in the history of the tournament, beaten only by Barry Hume in the days before he turned pro.
The seven-stroke winning margin is also believed not to be a record but, without question, Byrne's pair of 63s – 14 under par for Sunday's final two rounds – is the lowest third and fourth round aggregate in the history of the tournament.
Byrne faced only one challenge over the last two rounds. That came from Steven McEwan (Caprington), winner of the SGU Order of Merit last year.
He followed up his Saturday pair of 71s with a third-round 68 and
birdied five of the first eight holes in his final round to get to within three shots of leader Byrne.
But the wheels came off McEwan's charge when he took two shots in a bunker at the 12th
Nevertheless he did extremely well to finish with a 64 to finish in clear second place on 274 – four shots clear of third-placed Gavin Dear (Murrayshall), the top Scot in the R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings.
Dear scored 70, 75, 69 and 64 for 278.

a round to go in the Tennant Cup

Banchory's US college student James Byrne is heading to be top of the class in the Tennant Cup later today.
The 20-year-old Arizona State University team player, one of only two Scots to reach the last 16 of last week's British amateur championship at Formby, equalled the Killermont course record of seven-under-par 63 in the third round for a 54-hole tally of eight-under-par 204 and a six-stroke lead over Steven McEwan (Caprington), last year's SGU Order of Merit winner.

Byrne's was the second 63 of the day. Earlier, Australian Bryden MacPherson also had a seven-under-par round to match the course record held jointly by Glasgow Golf Club member and former Scotland cap Jonathan King and Cliff Barrowman.
Saturday's first two rounds were played at Glasgow Golf Club's Gailes links course in Ayrshire where the par is 71.
James Byrne has two SGU 72-hole Order of Merit tournament victories to his credit. He won the Newlands Trophy at Lanark a couple of years ago and the North-east District Open at Newburgh on Ythan last year.

Another rain delay at United States Open

The start of the third round of the United States Open championship at Bethpage, Long Island, New York has been delayed until noon local time (5pm BST) because of further overnight rain.
The USGA, organisers of this major championship, say they can still squeeze in the fourth and final round by the end of daylight - and this is the longest day of the year - today (Sunday) but it is looking increasingly likely that it will be Monday before a new champion is crowned.
