GOLF DATA LAB SPONSORED TOURNAMENT

Carnoustie's Cappi is new Scottish

youths champion at Renfrew

Carnoustie left-handed Angus Cappi was the surprise winner, by his own admission, of the Golf Data Lab Scottish youths open amateur stroke-play golf championship at
Renfrew Golf Club today.
Little known outside his native Angus prior to this 72-hole
breakthrough victory, the 19-year-old Cappi, whose coach is Kirriemuir's Karyn Dallas, held on grimly to the lead he had established over the first two rounds to win by one stroke.
Cappi, pictured with the trophy and medal by courtesy of the Scottish Golf Union, left Loretto School, Musselburgh last year and has been a full-time amateur golfer as he prepares to take up a golf scholarship with an American college in the autumn.
"My front nine in the third round was pretty poor but I finished strongly to recover and was only one over par at lunchtime – my only round when I didn't finish level or under, so that enabled me to hang on to my lead.
"I was a bit nervous heading into this afternoon's round but I knew if I could keep it steady I would be fine. Crichton was my nearest rival as the afternoon progressed and he really kept the pressure on, but my birdie at the 17th was a crucial moment for me. It eased things a bit
for me going down the last and even though I bogeyed the 18th I knew I had the title in the bag."
Cappi's three birdies in his final round helped to cancel out a bogey at the seventh plus an earlier slip at the second, which he felt was his biggest mistake of the day.
"I was in the middle of the fairway and I hooked my four-iron shot into the trees for a silly bogey, but apart from that I was pretty pleased with my game.
"To be honest I came to Renfrew not really expecting to win and I wasn't all that confident even after leading at halfway because I've never been in contention for a title. In some way, I probably wasn't under as much pressure as some of the bigger names who were expected to
win because everything was a bonus for me.
"It hasn't really sunk in yet, but it is a brilliant result for me."
Day one leader Delgaty Bay's Scott Crichton from Aberdour Golf Club was forced to settle for the second plac after he finished one-over-par for the tournament on 289. The disappointed 21-year old birdied the last on the testing parkland course but knew it was not enough to win the title.
Crichton, a star golfing student at the University of Western New Mexico, said, "I didn't drive the ball as."
Scotland could be proud of a 1-2 and shared third-place finish with William Bremner, Scottish boys' match-play championship runner up in 2007 tieing for third along with English players Scott Brace from Colchester and West Byfleet's Tom Hayes. The trio finished three over
for the tournament with a four round aggregate of 291.
McDonald Ellon's Adam Dunton was bang in the title picture until he took an 8 at the par 4 fourth. That put him out of the running for the title, dropping him back from second place in the third round to a final placing of sixth on 292 alongside Andrew Campell, and Germany's
Maximilian Walz from Germany – leader of the overseas contingent.
