At Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Club on Saturday, Bryan Fotheringham (Forres) successfully defended the North District Championship Cup in 20 years he won at Royal Dornoch in 2008.
After 34 holes Brya broke free from the pressing challenge of the 2005 champion, local player Michael MacDonald.
MacDonald, the local champion, held the first-round lead, but it was a narrow one on a day of low scoring, MacDonald a five-under par-66 to Fotheringham's 67. There was also a 67 from Inverness's Alan Cameron and a 69 from youth champion elect Lyle McAlpine (Invergordon).
In round two Fotheringham carded a 69 to post the eventual winning total of 136 while MacDonald saw his chance of a second championship fall badly away over the final two holes. An unfortunate break on his drive from the 17th tee saw his ball bounce viciously to the right and lost in bushes, resulting in double bogey 6 from his second ball. Then, from the 18th tee, his wayward drive found an unplayable lie to close his round with another double bogey, raising his second round score to 74.
MacDonald's 36 hole aggregate of 140 dropped him to a share of fourth place and climbing to the runner-up position was Cameron with a second-round 71 for 139.
Seventeen-year-old McAlpine won the Murray Watt Youth Trophy for the first time with a second-round 73 for 142, five ahead of Rodger Clarke (Moray) (72-75).
