News from the latest US PGA Tour event

It's Boston Party Time for Mike

Weir with a 1o-under-par 61

Canadian left-hander Mike Weir set the Deutsche Bank Championship alight with a first-round score of 10-under-par 61 at TPC Boston.
Weir finished the day three shots clear of Vijay Singh, John Merrick, Briny Baird and Heath Slocum.
Weir single-putted all nine greens on the back nine and rolled in seven birdie putts from 10 feet or beyond over the course of the day. In all, he made 140 feet of putts over the 18 holes and was nearly perfect at 17-of-18 from inside 20 feet. He almost holed a 60-footer for an eagle at the last. The ball shaved the hole.
A far cry indeed from the US PGA championship three weeks ago when the Canadian was so upset about his putting that he bent his putter in frustration and had to finish a round putting with a hybrid club.
This time, he knocked in birdies from 16 and 17 feet on the first two holes and started believing he couldn't miss.
"There was no indication on the putting green when I was warming up or whatever that was going to tell me it was going to be like that," he laughed. "It just felt normal. I was knocking in some 10 footers and putting around the hole, and my long putts weren't going in or anything on the putting green.
"Just one of those days where I made about a 15-footer on the first hole and another one on the second hole, and then I had about maybe eight feet on the third, and it looked easy after those first two."
Paul Casey was the best of British (and Irish) with a 68.
Martin Laird had a 70, the same score as Ian Poulter and Brian Davis.
Double major winner this season, Padraig Harrington has gone off the boil big time. He had a 75.
