Hugh Hunter's Clackmannan County round-up

NO EURO - STAR FOR CALLUM

At last week’s European individual championship, held at Esbjerg in Denmark, Tulliallan’s Callum Macaulay made a brave effort to recover from a bad start, but could only reach 11th equal place in a field of over 100.
A couple of disasters in the first round gave him an opening seven over par score of 78, leaving a lot to be done.
Faced with missing the cut, the Scottish amateur champion set about the task of a necessary sub-par second round in fine style. An outward two under par 33 followed by an inward half of one under gave him a 68, a 10-shot improvement and a share of 25th equal place, making the cut comfortably.
His final rounds were both one under par 70s, but not enough to challenge the leaders, leaving him third equal best Scot and 11th equal in the event with his 286 aggregate. However, he is probably thinking he could have been challenging strongly for the title had his first round been just over par.
The 2008 winner was German Stephan Gross with a four under par total of 280.

WORLD GOLF RANKINGS
In the latest rankings published by the R&A, Callum Macaulay has improved on his top 20 ranking, his highest to date. He now stands at World No 12, up one place from last week. County champion Scott Borrowman (Dollar) also sees his ranking move up a mammoth 94 places to 589. These rankings are used to determine the Scottish Golfer of the year, and Callum is in good position to retain his title from last year. At present he is 48 places above his nearest rival, Wallace Booth (Comrie).
In the Scottish Order of Merit, Steven McEwan (781pt) has a commanding lead and third placed Callum (the holder. with 525 points) is unlikely to catch him as he is disadvantaged by missing the South-east District championship due to his GB &I commitments this weekend. In the top 10 as well eighth-placed Scott Borrowman with 296 points.

INTERNATIONAL DUTIES
As reported earlier, Callum Macaulay will be at Kingsbarns this coming week for the Great Britain and Ireland match for the St Andrews Trophy against Europe. The two-day match starts on Friday, and hopefully there will be some local supporters for Callum.
The following week the focus goes to the Home Internationals at Muirfield with foursomes and singles over three days. Scott Borrowman is the named first reserve for the Scottish team, so he will be hoping for a last minute call-up.
Scotland will be hoping for an improvement in their third place from last year.

SENIORS GOLF
Due to flooding over the Hamilton course, the West of Scotland Seniors was cancelled, and Senior Champion Bob Stewart was unable to try to make some ground in the Seniors Order of Merit where he currently lies in third place.
This week is the Seniors Match play Championship at Drumpellier. The 57 entrants play two rounds stroke play and the leading scores play off for the match play title. It goes without saying that Bob will be very keen to try for the double Stroke and match Play titles.
Also in the field are Alloa golfing stalwart Michael Niven and County Executive member George Kay.

NORTH OF SCOTLAND CHAMPIONSHIP
Dollar’s Scott Borrowman opened with a level par aggregate (75,69) for his first two rounds to lie in 6th place, four shots behind the leaders over the Nairn course. His final two rounds of 76 and 73 gave him a 72 hole aggregate of 293, five shots behind the winner Kris Nicol (Fraserburgh who won on a play-off.
Scott must be reasonably happy with his 6th place, an improvement on last week’s placing in the North-east District championship.
