FOX'S HOLE IN ONE AT PAR 4 HELPS
HIM WIN OBAN 36-HOLE PRO-AM
East Kilbride's Graham Fox pulled out a master stroke to help him win the £868 top prize in the Glencruitten Golf Club, Oban 36-hole pro-am at the Oban venue today (Saturday).
Fox achieved that golfing rarity - a hole in one at a par-4 hole. He achieved his albatross 1 at the 280yd fourth hole which was not downwind, so it was quite a long and straight hit by Graham.
At the end of the day - the Tartan Tour pros seldom play 36 holes in one day - it was that shot that gave Fox victory with rounds of 61 and 60 for a one-under-par total of 121 over the 4,452yd par 61 course.
Runner-up, just one stroke behind, was former Walker Cup player Lindsay Mann (Carnoustie) with scores of 62 and 60 for 122, a performance that earned him £724.
David Orr (East Renfrewshire), joint first leader with Fox on 61, finished third after a second round of 63 for 124. His day's efforts earned him £580.
Colin White (The Carrick at Cameron House) improved by 16 hosts from first (81) to second round (65).
There was a "photo finish" to the team event with Fraser McLaughlan (Bothwell Castle) leading the "Junior Choppers" to victory with a net 50. The winning trio of amateurs were Sean Dunstaffnagh (handicap 18), Ruaridh Walton (14) and John MacKinnon (13).
They won it on a card countback - a better inward half of 25 to 27 - from another team who scored 50: Chris McCalman (unattached) and the "China Restaurant" trio of Kwong Loi Yip (17), Graham MacColl (2) and Ian Richmond (11).
