Hugh Hunter's Clackmannan County News

SCOTT FINDS GOLFING FORM
Dollar’s Scott Borrowman found top golfing form in last week's Palmer Cup, the match between American and European students.
Playing in both singles and foursomes, Scott recorded two wins, one half and one loss. His best performances came in the singles where he recorded one win and one half against Americans with much higher rankings than himself.
Scott who is ranked 617 in the world amateur rankings, scored a one hole win against Billy Horschell ranked 31, and followed that result with a halved match against the no 2 World Amateur Kevin Chappell.
In that match, Scott was never behind, went one up at the 17th, and it took a birdie from the American to square the match. The two-day match finished with Europe recording a 14-10 win over their American counterparts. Well done, Scott!
CALLUM AT THE BONNIE BANKS
Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan) is one of the three amateur invites to the Barclay’s Scottish Open at the Loch Lomond Golf Club next week. In this European Tour event, he will be competing alongside many of the top golfers, including the likes of Colin Montgomerie, Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson.
Callum will be hoping for some good golf to beat the two-round cut and play all four rounds. His guaranteed first two rounds will be on Thursday and Friday, July 10 and 11, so hopefully some local supporters will be there to give him some encouragement.
In the meantime, Callum is representing Scotland this week in the European team championships at the Royal Park Golf Club in North Italy. Twenty teams (including a team from emerging golf nation Estonia) will compete for the 2008 title over the par 72 course, measuring well over 7000 yards.
SUCCESS FOR BRAEHEAD
Braehead Golf Club scored their own success last week when their two-man team qualified for the Grand Final of the Belhaven Scottish Captains and Secretaries Championship. The team of John Williams and Murdie Gilmour came fourth with a score of 68 out of a field of 20 teams, and go forward Murrayshall near Perth in September.
Captain John Williams was pleased with the result. “The lion’s share of the success was undoubtedly due to Murdie and hopefully he can repeat that in the final,” he said.
The Alloa team of Hugh Hunter and Mike Smith (72) just missed out on the qualifying score of 71, with the Dollar team of Stuart Morrison and Jerry Cant (76) a bit further back.
SENIORS GOLF
After the East of Scotland Seniors event at Monifieth lately, Bob Stewart’s reign as No 1 in the Scottish Seniors Order of Merit came to an end and when he was overtaken by Gordon Macdonald and Ian Hutcheon. Bob finished in 33rd position in the event with rounds of 82 and 78.
SCOTTISH BOYS' UNDER-16 AND UNDER-14 CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2008 events will be played next week over the 6,300 yard par 70 Glen Course on the east side of North Berwick, and it is good to see a Clackmannan county representation although there are probably many more who could have entered.
In the Under-16s event, county junior boys' stroke-play champion Gary Chalmers (Dollar) is joined by former champion Tom Hogarth, also from Dollar. Top junior from Braehead, John McPherson. is also in the field of 120 whose highest handicap is 5.9
They will be trying to match Scott Borrowman’s win in the 2002 event over the Ratho Park Golf Course
In the Under-14s event, county junior match-play champion Lawrence Allan (Alva) and Alloa’s Calum Boyd compete in the field of 84 boys At the time of writing, Angus Boyd (also Alloa) is first reserve for the event, but hopefully should be playing on the day.
The Under-14 girls are also competing for their own title from a field of 28, but regretfully there are no entrants from Clackmannanshire
EAST OF SCOTLAND CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2008 Bobby Jones Golf Company-sponsored event at Lundin Links had only Scott Borrowman (Dollar) as a Clackmannanshire entrant. After rounds of 78 and 71, Scott made the cut for the final two rounds and finished with scores of 73 and 75 to give him a four-round total of 297 , a fair number of shots behind the winner Rohan Blizard (Australia) who won on a play- off.
COUNTY MIXED FOURS CHAMPIONSHIPS
After a two-year gap, the Clackmannan county mixed foursomes was resurrected at the Schawpark course last Sunday when four out of the six Clubs entered a team. For the first time, the event was played on a handicap basis, and the home club emerged as the 2008 winners.
