Shields, Smith tie for Irvine
victory on SGU Junior Tour
FROM THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION WEBSITE
Paul Shields and Kyle Smith finished joint first at the second SGU Junior Tour event of the season at Irvine Golf Club.
Shields, a finalist at the Scottish boys championship just a few weeks ago - he missed out to eventual victor Michael Stewart, winner of the first Junior Tour event at Kingsbarns - was determined to follow the national championship with an early season title win.
The Kirkhill player, a member of the winning side at the Boys Quadrangular in his first team event of the season, bagged three birdies in his first round to finish three over on the tough links course, one of the Open qualifying venues in 2004.
With a trio of birdies in his following round, Shields’ one over par 72, the lowest round of the day matched only by one other competitor in the field, Tom Blennerhassett from Dalmahoy, propelled him to the top of the leader board. However, Kilmarnock Barassie’s Smith - a former winner of the George MacDonald Memorial Bowl for the leading Under-16 player at the Scottish boys' stroke-play when it was hosted at Monifieth - achieved two consistent rounds of 73, buoyed by sinking a 20ft putt at the last which saw him share the spoils with Shields.
Tom Blennerhassett finished three shots adrift of the leaders on seven over par, while Inchmarlo player Chris Robb finished in fourth place on eight over.
The next Junior Tour event will be hosted at Whitekirk Golf & Country Club on May 4.
