Zack Saltman missed third-round cut
GLENN CAMPBELL IS TOP SCOT IN
PORTUGUESE CHAMPIONSHIP
Former Scottish match-play champion Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie) finished as the leading Scot - in joint 22nd place - in the Portuguese men's amateur international championship at Estela Golf Club today.
Pedro Figueiredo was the "local hero." The only Portuguese player in the top 40-odd, he won the title by two shots with scores of 70, 69, 70 and 73 for a six-under-par total of 284.
Pedro avoided the sometimes remarkable rocketing scores by other players, such as Glenn Campbell himself who had rounds of 76, 75, 66 and 79 for eight-over 296 ... a 13-stroke "slump" between the third and fourth rounds.
Then there was Gavin Dear from Murrayshall. He finished joint 25th on 297 with scores of 74, 79, 69 and 75 .... a 10-shot improvement from the second to the third round.
Young Zack Saltman's "yo-yo" scoring put him on the sidelnes on the final day. He was quite prominent in the second-round standings after scores of 76 and 68 ... but a 14-shot deterioration to produce a third-round 82 for 226 saw him miss the 54-hole cut by two strokes.
Zack was one of seven Scots who missed the cut.
