HUNTLY MAN WINS CRUDEN BAY
ALLIANCE BY FOUR STROKES
Huntly scratch player Don Garrett's two-over-par 70 for the Cruden Bay winter course was good enough to give him a four-stroke victory over a field of 81 in bright but quite breezy conditions for the last North-east Golfers' Alliance competition of the year.
Garrett had a roller-coaster ride of an inward half of 33 which included only two par figures. He had birdies at the 12th, 13th 14th and 16th but also double bogey 6s at the 15th and 17th as well as a bogey at the 10th.
Runners-up on 74 were Craibstone professional Iain Buchan and amateurs Craig Stephen (Meldrum House), Stuart Pert (Huntly) and Fergus Bisset (Banchory).
Stephen did well to come back into the reckoning after marking up a quadruple bogey 8 at the first hole. Stuart Perth had a triple bogey 7 at the 15th. Bissett and Buchan had double bogey 6s at the second and fifth respectively.
It was a good day for the Huntly connection. Apart from Garrett and Pert, who both play out of the Huntly club, Stephen is also a member at Huntly as well as Meldrum House, his home club.
The North-east Alliance season resumes on Wednesday, January 9 at Craibstone.
