LLOYD SALTMAN STRUGGLING
TO MAKE THE GRADE IN EURO
TOUR QUALIFYING IN SPAIN
Most pundits predicted a smooth transfer for Lloyd Saltman from the amateur to the professional ranks - but it is not working out that way.
The Craigielaw Walker Cup man, pictured right, is struggling to figure among the European Tour Qualifying School Stage 2 qualifiers for next week's Final Qualifying at San Roque.
Saltman has shot 72 and 74 at Arcos Gardens in Spain and is languishing in joint 40th place on 146 at this venue, from which only the 19 leaders after four rounds will go on to the decisive stage.
Sion Bebb’s drive to regain his European Tour card continued unabated as he opened up a six stroke lead at the halfway stage of Qualifying School – Second Stage at Sherry Golf, Jerez.
The Welshman shot a second round 68 to move to 11 under par 133, six strokes clear of Argentina’s Emilio Dominguez, Sarel Son-Houi of France, Fredrik Orest of Sweden and the Irish amateur Peter O’Keeffe.
The leading 18 players from Sherry Golf after four rounds will progress to the Qualifying School Final Stage.
A total of 74 qualifying places are available from the 308 hopefuls teeing up at four courses in Spain – Costa Ballena Club de Golf, Arcos Gardens Golf Club, Sherry Golf and PGA Golf de Catalunya – with the successful players progressing to next week’s European Tour Qualifying School Final Stage, played over the Old and New Courses at San Roque Club, Spain, from November 15-20. The top 30 and ties after that six-round examination will graduate to The 2008 European Tour International Schedule.
England’s David Dixon added a 68 to his opening 67 to forge a three stroke lead over Belgium’s Didier de Vooght at Arcos Gardens where the leading 19 players will continue their quest for a European Tour card next week at San Roque.
At Costa Ballena, Australian Adam Bland moved to the head of proceedings with a second successive 67 to lead England’s Lee S James by two strokes. Twenty players will go through to the Final Stage after Saturday’s fourth round. There was also a bit of excitement for England’s Grant Jackson as he holed-in-one on the 148 yards 16th hole with a seven iron
Frenchman Benoit Teilleria leads at PGA Golf de Catalunya after a superb seven under par 65 took him to 11 under par 133 and two clear of Spain’s Juan Parron and in pole position to lead the 17 qualifiers.
