JAMES BYRNE HAS EIGHT BIRDIES AND A
PAIR OF 74s ON US COLLEGE DEBUT DAY

Banchory's James Byrne returned a four-over-par score of 74 on his debut on the American college golf circuit today in the first round of the Olympia Fields Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields Country Club, Illinois.
Byrne recently started a four-year golf scholarship at Arizona State University.
James started brilliantly by birdieing his first three holes in the United States. Then he bogeyed the fourth, took a triple bogey 7 at the seventh, and bogeys at the eighth and ninth to be out in 38.
A double-bogey 6 at the 10th put him five over par but he birdied the 11th, bogeyed the 14th and birdied the 17th for 36 home.
Spanish student Jorge Campillo (Indiana University) led the field with a 69.
Three students from England - Chris Paisley (Tennessee) from Newcastle, Tom Oliver (Purdue) from Nottingham and Charles Ford (Tennessee) from Leicester scored 71, 72 and 74 respectively.
Later news:
In the second round, James Byrne repeated his opening 74 for a 36-hole total of 148. He has had one triple bogey 7 and two double bogey 6s over the first two rounds but, more encouraging, is the fact that he has notched eight birdies as well.
HOW THEY STAND
133 Rickie Fowler (Oklahoma State) 70 63.
136 Jorge Campillo (Indiana) 69 67.
Also:
143 Tom Oliver (Purdue) 72 71 (9th).
147 Chris Paisley (Tennessee) 71 76 (jt 25th).
148 J Byrne (Arizona State) 74 74, Charles Ford (Tennessee) 74 74 (jt 30th).
Teams: 567 Oklahoma State. 570 Texas. 576 Florida State. Also: 585 Arizona State (8th).

SCOTT LARKIN ALSO STARTS WITH A 74

... Meanwhile another Banchory exile, Scott Larkin, a student at the College of Charleston, also started with a 74 which left him sharing 21st place at the end of the first round of the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic - a funny name for a golf tournament, don't you think? - at Notre Dame's University course at South Bend, Indiana.
Larkin, who had easily the best score of the College of Charleston squad, was six shots behind the pacemakers, Graham Baillargean (Michigan State) and Doug Fortner (Notre Dame) on 66.
